Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed to work towards the fair, proper and mutually acceptable solution of the Indo-China border issue on Sunday (August 31, 2025). He also pledged to expand business and investment relations, acknowledging the role of both economies in stabilizing global trade.
The conversation between PM Modi and Xi Jinping in Northern China’s Tianjin city on the sidelines of the Annual Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation (SCO) took place in the backdrop of the upheaval in the global economy due to the tariff policy of the administration led by US President Donald Trump. The two leaders in their comprehensive conversation mainly focused on promoting trade and investment relations.
Modi emphasized the importance of peace and harmony in border areas
In the meeting, Prime Minister Modi underlined the importance of peace and harmony in the border areas for the continuous development of India-China relations. He said that New Delhi is committed to pursue its relationship with Beijing on the basis of mutual trust, respect and sensitivity.
According to a statement issued by India, the two leaders committed to promote bilateral trade and investment relations and reduce trade deficit. He agreed to expand the shared base on bilateral, regional and global issues and challenges on terrorism and multilateral forums.
India-China cooperation is related to the interests of 2.8 billion people- PM Modi
In his statement aired on television, PM Modi said, ‘Our cooperation is related to the interests of 2.8 billion people of both countries. This will also pave the way for the welfare of all humanity. At the same time, the Ministry of External Affairs (Mea) said in its statement that Modi and Xi Jinping accepted the role of both economies in stabilizing the world trade and underlined the need to move political and strategically to promote bilateral trade and investment relations and to reduce trade deficit.
Mea said, ‘The Prime Minister emphasized that both India and China want strategic autonomy and their relations should not be seen from the perspective of a third country. The two leaders described the expansion of shared base on bilateral, regional and global issues and challenges on terrorism and multilateral forums.
What did PM Modi say after meeting with Jinping,
In a social media post, PM Modi termed his conversation with Xi Jinping as fruitful. He wrote, ‘We reviewed the positive pace of India-China relations after our last meeting in Kazan, Russia. We admitted that it is important to maintain peace and harmony in the border areas. We reiterated our commitment to cooperation based on mutual respect, interests and sensitivity.
India and China have taken several steps in recent months to remove the increased tussle in the relationship between the two countries after the violent clashes between Indian and Chinese soldiers in the Galwan Valley of East Ladakh in June 2020. Modi reached Tianjin in China from Japan on Saturday (30 August 2025) in the second phase of his visit to two countries. This is Modi’s first visit to China after more than seven years.
After meeting in Kazan, peace remains on India-China border- PM Modi
The Prime Minister said, “After the meeting of his and Xi Jinping in Kazan in October last year, there is an atmosphere of peace and stability on the Indo-China border.” At the same time, the Ministry of External Affairs said, ‘The two leaders welcomed the positive speed of bilateral relations and the continuous progress in it after their last meeting in Kazan in October. He emphasized that both countries are development partners, not the opponents and their differences should not be converted into controversies.
The ministry said, “Steady relations and cooperation based on mutual respect, interest and sensitivity between India, China and their 2.8 billion people are essential for the multiproof world and multipolar Asia, along with the growth and development of both countries, as well as the 21st century trends.” He said that the two leaders expressed satisfaction over the successful return of soldiers last year (from the disputed points of Eastern Ladakh) and the restoration of peace and harmony in the border areas.
Modi and Jinping committed to bilateral relations- Mea
The ministry said, “Modi and Xi Jinping committed to the political perspective of their overall bilateral relations and the long -term interests of the people of the two countries, committing to the fair, appropriate and mutually acceptable solution of the border issue.” He said, “The two leaders referred to the important decisions taken in the talks between two special representatives earlier this month and agreed to support their efforts even further.”
According to the ministry, Modi and Xi Jinping also underlined the need to strengthen the relationship between people through direct flights and visa facilities based on the restoration of Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and tourist visa.
He said, ‘Both leaders accepted the important role of their economy in stabilizing world trade in connection with economic and business relations. He emphasized the need to move political and strategically to expand bilateral trade and investment relations and to reduce trade deficit.
PM Modi Sco Congratulations to Jinping for successful chairmanship
Modi also congratulated Xi Jinping for successfully presiding over the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on behalf of China. He also invited the Chinese President to attend the proposed BRICS summit in India in 2026. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, President Xi Jinping thanked Modi for the invitation and offered China’s support for India’s BRICS chairmanship.
The ministry said, ‘Modi also held a meeting with Caqi, a member of the Standing Committee of Polit Bureau of China, China. The Prime Minister shared his stand on bilateral relations in a meeting with Qui and sought their support to realize the two leaders (Modi and X). In the meeting, Qui reiterated the wishes of the Chinese side to increase the relationship as per the consent between the two leaders and the consent between the two leaders.
