Rahul Gandhi alleges that the Maharashtra Assembly Elections (2024) were rigged.
The Election Commission (EC) has written a letter to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. In this, an invitation to discuss his allegations of rigging in Maharashtra assembly elections has been sent. According to ANI, the letter has also been sent to Mail and Rahul’s residence on 12 June.
The EC wrote in the letter- Electoral law, its rules passed by the Parliament of India and the instructions of the Election Commission from time to time are very strictly conducted in the country. The Maharashtra assembly election process is conducted centralized at the assembly constituency level.
It includes EC appointed BLO, 288 Electoral Registration Officer, 139 General Observer, 41 Police Observer, 71 expenditure Observer and 288 Returning Officer and 1 lakh 8 thousand 26 booth level agents appointed by national and state political parties in Maharashtra. These include 28,421 agents of the Congress.
In fact, Rahul Gandhi alleges that the Maharashtra assembly elections were rigged and a government of Mahayuti was formed in the state. Rahul had demanded the Election Commission to share the CCTV of webcasting of voting centers, which was turned down by the commission. The EC has said that by doing this, those who vote and do not vote may have to face trouble.
During the Chandigarh Mayor Election in January 2024, CCTV footage was revealed to tamper with election officer Anil Christ to tamper with ballot paper. After this, the Commission changed the rule twice.
Rahul wrote- coverup is confession
Here, Rahul Gandhi wrote in X post- The voter list in his constituency of Maharashtra Chief Minister (Devendra Fadnavis) has increased by 8% in just 5 months. Some booths saw an increase of 20–50%. The BLO reported the votes of unknown persons. The media discovered thousands of voters without verification addresses and the Election Commission is silent. Is this complicity? These are not different disturbances. This is the vote theft. Coverup is the confession. Therefore, we demand immediate release of machine reduced digital voter list and CCTV footage.
June 21: EC refuses to make polling centers footage public The Election Commission said on June 21 that it is not right to share CCTV footage of webcasting of voting centers. This will make it easier to identify voters, groups. Both voters and non -votes may be victims of pressure, discrimination and threats of anti -social elements. Doing so will be a violation of the legal provisions of the Representation of the People Act and the directions of the Supreme Court.
The Commission had given examples that a particular political party gets less votes at a particular booth, then it will be able to identify very easily through CCTV footage of who voted for them and who did not. After this, those who do not vote can be harassed. Read full news …
June 20: Recording will be preserved for 45 days
The Election Commission had said on June 20 that now photos, CCTV footage, webcasting and video recording taken during the elections will be kept safe for only 45 days. After this all the data will be deleted.
On May 30, the EC had directed the Chief Election Officers of all the states that if the election results in a constituency are not challenged in the court, then all these data should be destroyed after 45 days.
EC says that this decision was taken to misuse footage and to stop misleading information being spread on social media. Because recently some non-tailors tried to distort the election video and spread the wrong erection, causing confusion among the voters.
Congress bid- earlier data was kept safe for one year
The Congress is against the 45 -day decision of the Election Commission. The party has said that earlier this data was kept safe for one year, so that it could be investigated anytime in the democratic system. This rule of the Commission is completely against democracy. It should be withdrawn immediately.
20 December: Ban on video recording
Earlier, on 20 December 2024, the Central Government changed the election rules to stop the polling station from making the CCTV, webcasting and video recording of candidates public.
The Election Commission said that there is no legal provision for recording of election stages like voting and counting. This work is done for internal surveillance and transparency, but these recording has also been used for wrong erections. Therefore, there is no justification for keeping them for a long time.
Till now the recordings related to the election were handled for one year, so that there could be a legal investigation if needed.
There was a change in the rules in December 2024 On December 20, the Central Government had changed the rules of election to prevent some electronic documents from public -recording CCTV, webcasting footage and video recording of polling station.
Officials said that with the use of AI, the CCTV footage of the polling station can be tampered with and spread the fake nectar. Even after the change, they will be available for candidates. Others may go to court to take it. On the recommendation of the Election Commission, the Law Ministry had changed the rule of The Conduct of Election Rule-1961.
However, the Congress has challenged the rules to prevent the electronic documents related to the election in the Supreme Court.
On 22 December 2024, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge had said that the Modi government had attacked the Election Commission (ECI) freedom.
Congress bid- Modi government is ending democratic system
The Congress has criticized this decision of the Election Commission, saying that this step is against democracy and transparency. The Congress alleged that ‘the Election Commission and the Modi government together are engaged in ending the democratic system. First documents were hidden from the public, now records are being erased. The Commission should withdraw this order immediately.
