‘Release prisoners who have completed the term of sentence’, Supreme Court said on the plea of the Nitish Katara murder case

The Supreme Court has said that if a person is punished for a fixed period, then it should be released as soon as the period ends. He does not need to apply to the government for exemption in punishment like other prisoners. The court has given this important decision on the petition of Sukhdev Pahalwan, convicted of the Nitish Katara murder case.

The Supreme Court had ordered the release of Sukhdev wrestler on July 30. Now a detailed decision of the court has come. The Supreme Court has ordered the immediate release of all the prisoners who have been lodged in jails across the country, who have completed the sentence of imprisonment for a certain period of time from the court.

Sukhdev Pahalwan had said in the petition that he was sentenced to 20 years in this case. The 20 -year period was completed on March 10, 2025, but was not released. He applied for release to the Sajja Review Board of Delhi Government, but the board refused.

Nitish Katara was befriended by Bahubali DP Yadav’s daughter Bharti. Bharti and Nitish were with Bharti and Nitish at a wedding ceremony in Ghaziabad on the night of 16 February 2002. Seeing this, Bharti’s brother Vikas became very angry. He, along with his cousin Vishal, kidnapped Nitish. Taking about 80 km from Ghaziabad, he killed him with a hammer. Sukhdev wrestler supported him in this.

On 30 May 2008, the lower court sentenced Vikas, Vishal and Sukhdev Pahalwan to life imprisonment. On 2 April 2014, the Delhi High Court also justified this decision. The High Court sentenced Vikas and Vishal 25-25 years and Sukhdev to 20 years. Neelam Katara filed an appeal in the Supreme Court demanding the hanging for the culprits, but the Supreme Court did not change the decision of the High Court.
