RJD was made on 5 July 1997

RJD was formed on 5 July 1997. At that time Lalu Prasad Yadav was the President of the then Janata Dal and the Chief Minister of Bihar. The heat of the investigation of the fodder scam, which began in the early nineties, had reached Lalu.

The CBI had prepared a charge sheet against Lalu Yadav after investigation. Amidst the big allegations of scam, a section of the Janata Dal was pressurizing Lalu to resign from the post of party president and Bihar Chief Minister.

Lalu understood the practice of the occasion and in a hurry called a meeting of his confidant. 17 Lok Sabha and 8 Rajya Sabha members who supported Lalu attended this meeting. It was decided in the meeting that a new party should be formed now leaving the Janata Dal.

Lalu also agreed when the support of colleagues got the support. The formation of the Rashtriya Janata Dal was announced and Lalu was made the national president.

This party of Lalu got a lantern election symbol. On which Lalu Yadav claimed that this lantern will bring light to the poor’s hut and will raise the slogan of socialism.

Who were the leaders at the time of party formation

At the time of the formation of the party, a large number of supporters were gathered in the presence of 17 Lok Sabha MPs and 8 Rajya Sabha MPs including Lalu Prasad Yadav, Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, Kanti Singh. Lalu Prasad Yadav is its national president since the establishment of the party.

Talking to the media after the formation of the party, Lalu Prasad had said that ‘our party will be an original party’. A few days after the formation of a new party, Lalu Prasad made a new political move and made his wife Rabri Devi the Chief Minister of Bihar on 24 July 1997. Lalu Prasad did two things together. He formed his own separate party and also saved his power.

My son will pick up lantern

Lalu Prasad kept his party in power in Bihar from 1997 to 2005. In the middle, Nitish Kumar came to power for 7 days. Stayed with Nitish from 2015 to 2017 and 2022 to 28 February 2024.

Lalu Prasad has clearly said about his sons that ‘my son will pick up the lantern, Nitish should think about his son’. Lalu Prasad made Tejashwi Yadav a deputy CM and Tej Pratap Yadav a minister.

For the third time from RJD, elder daughter Misa Bharti was given a ticket from Pataliputra Lok Sabha seat and after losing twice, she became MP for the third time from Pataliputra seat. Lalu Prasad also sent him to Rajya Sabha twice.

RJD’s political journey

At the time of the formation of RJD, there was a huge upheaval atmosphere in the politics of Bihar. The sword of arrest was hanging on the then Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav in the fodder scam case. Along with the opposition, a section of the Janata Dal was also under pressure on Lalu. In such a situation, Lalu formed Rashtriya Janata Dal and after the arrest was fixed, Lalu handed over the reins of Bihar to Rabri and went to jail.
