Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar believes that the cricketing future of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli is now in the hands of the selectors. The team’s performance has declined due to both the batsmen being out of form for the last six months.

After the clean sweep at home against New Zealand and losing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after 10 years, questions are being raised on the Test future of Virat and Rohit.

batting flop since 6 months Gavaskar said, India has not been able to qualify for the WTC (World Test Championship) final. The team will have to consider the reasons why this happened, due to which our batting was poor. Neither were we able to play on the spinning track made by ourselves nor could we perform well on the bouncy track.

The two main batsmen of the batting unit, Rohit and Kohli, proved to be the biggest weakness of the team. In BGT, Kohli scored 190 runs in 9 innings including an unbeaten century. Whereas Rohit could score only 31 runs in 5 innings. The Indian team could not cross the 200 mark 6 times in 9 innings of the series.

Preparations have to be made now for 2027 WTC The former captain said, the batting has been poor in the last six months and that was the main reason why we lost matches which we should have won. Therefore, if we have to reach the final of the 2027 WTC, the selectors will have to decide how to build the team in the Test series starting in England from June.

75 The senior said, the time has come to give a chance to the player who has performed well in the domestic circuit.

Praise on Nitish’s selection Gavaskar praised the selectors for selecting a talented player like Nitish Kumar Reddy. This time India scored three centuries in BGT. Apart from Nitish, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli had scored centuries.

Regarding bowlers, Gavaskar said, India has a lot of talent in the bowling attack. But it should be decided that there should not be too much workload on a bowler like Jasprit Bumrah.

Nitish was the second top scorer of the Indian team in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2025. He had scored 298 runs in 9 innings.

Don’t adopt superstar culture Gavaskar said, the practice of keeping star cricketers in high positions in Indian cricket has been a problem. This has come in the last few years. Everyone should know their role.
