Russia-ukraine war: Russia killed Ukraine’s F-16 fighter aircraft on Sunday (29 June 2025), in which a Ukrainian pilot also died. The Ukrainian army said that last night Russia had carried out many drones and missile attacks. At the same time, a F-16 fighter jet came under target of the Russian army and was destroyed.
Russia launched more than 500 drones and missiles on the night of Saturday (28 June 2025) and launched the biggest aerial attack so far. This attack shocked many areas of western, southern and central Ukraine.
Ukraine’s Air Force reported that it faced 477 drones and 60 missiles. Of these, 249 drones were killed and 226 were ineffective through electronic jamming. The attack has been seen as the most powerful bombing campaign from Russia since the beginning of the war.
Pilot killed 7 targets, F-16 dies after being damaged
The Ukraine’s Air Force confirmed that in an attempt to stop the attack, a F-16 fighter jet became the target of the Russian army and its pilot was martyred. The pilot killed 7 airstrikes, but the jet was damaged while attacking the last target. After hitting the missile, the fighter jet started falling rapidly from the height. During this time, the pilot kept trying to take the aircraft away from the population area. Ukraine’s Air Force issued a statement on Telegram, saying that the pilot used all its onboard weapons, but in the last attack, the aircraft was badly damaged and could not get out on time. Three fighter jets of Ukraine have been destroyed in Russia attacks so far.
Russia intensifies airstrikes on Ukraine
According to the Reuters report, the attack is a sign of intensifying the bombing strategy from Russia. Experts believe that the possibilities of peace talks have become more tarnished by this level of military aggression. Russia used cruise, ballistic and hypersonic missiles as well as ‘Fals Targets’ (fake weapons) during this attack to confuse the Ukrainian defense system.
Ukraine got support from America and colleagues
Ukraine recently received the first consignment of F-16 fighter aircraft with the help of Netherlands and Denmark. These aircraft are being operated under American training and technical cooperation. On 26 May 2025, one of the two final F-16 aircraft from Volkel Airbase was sent to Ukraine, but now after losing another aircraft, the pressure on Ukraine’s air security capacity has increased further.
