Team India was announced for the Champions Trophy on Saturday. Captain Rohit Sharma and Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar held a press conference and informed about the team selection. Mohammed Siraj and Sanju Samson were dropped from the team. Despite having an average of 752 in domestic cricket, Karun Nair could not make it to the squad.
The selection of some players in the team was also surprising. Despite the pitch being conducive to fast bowling in Dubai, 2 spin all-rounders including Washington Sundar got a chance. Arshdeep Singh, who played only 8 ODIs, was included in the top-10 of ICC ODI bowlers rankings in place of Siraj.
The story includes analysis of BCCI’s team selection and possible playing-11…
Why did these players not get a place?
1. Mohammad Siraj: Team’s top wicket taker from 2022 Captain Rohit Sharma said in the press conference, ‘Bumrah and Shami are present in the team to bowl with the new ball. Siraj is not effective with the old ball, hence he was dropped. However, dropping Siraj is a very surprising decision, because since January 2022, he has taken the highest number of 71 wickets for India.
Siraj starts the innings for India with the new ball. He did not start with the new ball for the last time in the 2023 ODI World Cup final. By excluding Siraj, the team gave a chance to Arshdeep Singh. The team also kept 4 spinners. Whereas the pitch of Dubai is more helpful for fast bowlers. Here in the last 5 years in ODI, pacers have taken 60% wickets and spinners have taken 40% wickets. India has to play all the matches in Dubai only.
2. Sanju Samson: Scored a century in the last ODI Samson’s name was forward as a backup wicketkeeper, but in his place Rishabh Pant got a place in the 15-member team. Whichever player Pant or Samson got a place in the 15, both would have to sit out of the first choice playing-11. Because KL Rahul has cemented his place at the wicketkeeper position.
Samson had scored a century for India in the last ODI against South Africa in South Africa. Overall, he has 510 runs in his name in 16 ODIs with the help of 3 fifty and one century. His average is also 56.66. It was difficult to get him out, but Pant’s international experience and his high-risk batting got Samson out.
3. Karun Nair: There is no point in performing in domestic cricket After losing the Test series in Australia, BCCI made it mandatory for all players to play domestic cricket. However, the selection committee does not give much importance to the players who perform well in domestic cricket. Because if this had happened, then batsman Karun Nair, who scored runs at an average of 752, would definitely have got a place in the current Vijay Hazare Trophy. While captaining Vidarbha, Nair scored 5 centuries and one fifty in 8 matches of the 50-over domestic tournament. Before team selection, he had been out only once.
Karun finished the tournament with 779 runs, becoming Vijay Hazare’s top run scorer. Despite this, he did not get a place, whereas Yashasvi Jaiswal, who did not even make his debut in ODI, was given a place in the team. It was difficult for 33-year-old Nair to be included in the playing-11, perhaps that is why he was kept out of the team.
4. Nitish Kumar Reddy: Shines in Australia, out of ODI team The pitch of Dubai is more helpful for fast bowlers. India selected 4 all-rounders, 3 of whom bowl spin. Captain Rohit said that having 4 options will make it easier for him to take decisions. However, if this decision had been taken keeping in mind the Dubai pitch, Nitish Kumar Reddy would have been given a chance instead of a spin all-rounder. Who is a pace bowling all-rounder.
Like Yashasvi, Nitish has also not made his ODI debut yet, but he had performed well with his batting during the last series in Australia. After Yashasvi and Rahul, he was the top run scorer of the team. If needed, he can also bowl a few overs. Still, the reason for his ouster could be his inexperience.
Why did these players get a place?
1. Yashasvi Jaiswal: Made place as fourth opener Yashasvi has been selected entirely on the basis of his recent form in Tests. He was India’s top run scorer during the Test series in Australia. He has scored 1511 runs in domestic ODIs at an average of 53.96. Which includes 5 Centuries and 7 Fifty, but Karun Nair also had such performance.
Yashasvi was included as a backup opener. However, there is also a third opener in the team in the form of KL Rahul. Who can open in case of Shubman or Rohit getting injured. Despite this, the decision to select Yashasvi is shocking. However, Yashasvi is only 23 years old, so it is possible that he has been included with the team to give him experience of ICC ODI tournaments. Because after Rohit, he is seen holding the opening position along with Shubman.
2. Washington Sundar: If you shine in Test, you get a chance in ODI Captain Rohit said that having 4 all-rounders in the team gives more options. Sundar has impressed with both bat and ball in the last 4 months. However, this performance came in Test format. In ODI, he has 23 wickets in 22 matches, while with the bat he could score only 315 runs with one fifty. Looking at the Dubai pitch, a pacer or pace bowling all-rounder could have been selected in his place.
3. Arshdeep Singh: Could take only 12 wickets in ODI Arshdeep is a left arm pacer and swings the new ball both ways. He got the chance to replace Siraj, who was dropped on the grounds that he could not make an impact with the old ball. However, his replacement Arshdeep is also more effective with the new ball. His experience is also only 8 ODIs, in which he has taken 12 wickets. The biggest role in Arshdeep’s selection can be considered to be his bowling arm, because apart from him there is not a single left arm pacer in the team.
4. Rishabh Pant: Played only 1 ODI in 2 years Pant has played only one ODI in the last 2 years. Still, the reason for his selection could be his X-factor batting. Because he has won many matches for Team India with his high risk cricket in Test format. Pant has so far scored 871 runs in 31 ODIs by scoring 5 fifties and one century. His average is only 33.50. Pant’s statistics are weak compared to Samson, but his high-risk cricket earned him a place in the ODI squad.
Why did Shubman become the vice captain? Another surprising decision in the team selection was that Shubman Gill was made the vice-captain. His form is also not going much these days, yet he was given this responsibility. The Chief Selector said, Shubman was also the vice-captain in the last series against Sri Lanka. Team management also takes decisions keeping the future in mind. Many things came to light about Shubman from the dressing room also, due to which he got this responsibility.
This statement of Agarkar has made one thing clear, after Rohit Sharma leaves the ODI format, Shubman will be the next captain of the team. Shubman has also scored a lot of runs in this format. He has 2328 runs in his name in 47 matches of this format at an average of 58.20. This average is better than Virat Kohli. Not only this, Shubman has also scored 6 centuries and 13 fifties. Which also includes a double century.
India’s possible playing-11 for Champions Trophy
