The secret behind autism has finally come to the fore. Scientists at Kobe University, Japan have recognized the genetic cause of autism through a landmark study which is expecting the development of new drugs. This news can not only bring a revolution in medical science but in a country like India, where there are about 1.8 crore people affected by autism, a new ray can become for those families.
What does study say
According to the report of Daily Mail, this study has revealed that autism is caused by some special gene mutations that spoil the brain’s natural ‘maintenance system’. This system removes waste and damaged material from the brain. When this system fails, neural cells are unable to send and receive signals properly, causing problems in learning, language and social contacts. These are the main symptoms of autism.
Researchers claim that this discovery can open the way to targeted drugs for autism. After this, such medicines can also be made in the coming time, which fix this maintenance system of the brain and reduce the symptoms. This study is also associated with other neurological disorder such as schizophrenia and other neurological disorder.
What is the meaning to India
Lack of autism awareness and treatment in India is still a big challenge. According to Autism India Network, 1 out of every 100 children in the country can be affected by autism i.e. about 1.8 crore people. But due to delay in diagnosis and social stigma, many families are unable to take help. This study has raised new hope because it can open the way for cheap and effective medicines which can prove to be revolutionary for developing countries like India.
Although this study is currently in the initial stage, researchers are planning to start clinical trials soon. If you get success, then the first gene-based drug for autism can come in the market in the next 5-10 years. Also, this study will also help in increasing the understanding of Neuro Developmental Disorder.
