The era of Shubman Gill has now started in Indian cricket. The Cricket Control Board of India (BCCI) also made Shubman Gill the captain of the ODI team on 4 October (Saturday). Earlier, Shubman took the captaincy of the Test team through the tour of England. Shubman has become the captain of the ODI team in place of veteran batsman Rohit Sharma.
Another big thing is that Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the vice-captain of the ODI team. This step of BCCI is clearly considered part of the strategic plan for the future, in which the board is gradually working towards making Shubman Gill a permanent leader of the Indian team in all three formats. Let us know that Shubman is currently the vice-captain of the Indian team in T20 cricket, while Suryakumar Yadav handles the captaincy in this format.

The ODI squad consists of experienced players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who will maintain experience and balance in the team. Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Mohammed Shami, Varun Chakraborty and Ravindra Jadeja have not been selected in the team. In these five ICC Champions Trophy, the Indian team was not available due to Pant and Hardik Injury. At the same time, Varun Chakraborty, Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami were dropped.
What did you say to keep Ravindra Jadeja out?
Chief selector Ajit Agkar said that Ravindra Jadeja has to be kept out, it is a strategic decision because Kuldeep Yadav and Washington Sundar are already present in the team. Nitish Kumar Reddy, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurael, famous Krishna and Mohammad Siraj have become part of the ODI team. These five players were out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. KL Rahul is part of the ODI squad as the first choice keeper for wicketkeeping.
Team selection also indicates that the BCCI now wants to give opportunity to the youth leadership in ODI format, so that India can get a permanent captain in future. Especially the responsibility given to Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer relies on their leadership skills and the ability to win the match. Experts believe that this team selection is important not only for the upcoming series but also for the preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
The goal of team management is to gain experience and the team gets strong leadership. This team selection made it clear that the BCCI is actively working towards preparing the captain for the future. Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer are being prepared to handle Indian cricket.
