There is confusion about the upcoming general elections in Bangladesh. Manzil Murshid, President of Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh, has feared that elections may be postponed once again in the country. So far, the Election Commission has not announced the official program.
Murshid said in a statement, a conspiracy was seen in the country after 5 August 2024. The government did not take steps towards holding independent, fair and inclusive elections as per the demand of the people. Meanwhile, Dr. Muhammad Yunus came to power as an interim government, while there is no system in the Constitution.
He further said that the Chief Advisor finally went to London, where he met Tariq Rahman, acting president of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). A joint announcement was made after this meeting, which said that elections will be held in February, but the situation is still not clear. The Election Commission has not released any official program so far.

In fact, the opposition in Bangladesh has been alleging that the government is affecting the election process and the possibility of fair elections remains doubtful. Even if elections are held in February, it will still have to be seen if they will be really fair and inclusive. At the moment, all eyes are on the Election Commission.
‘Election is not possible without government cooperation …’
Last week, Bangladesh Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin said in a statement that elections are not possible without the cooperation of the government. He said that the government has a central role in the election process and it is not possible to conduct elections without its cooperation.
Nasir Uddin said, no matter how free the Election Commission is, it is not possible to conduct elections without the cooperation of the government. We have to conduct elections only with the cooperation of the government.
He also added that the Commission needs the help of law enforcement agencies, administration and their officials for the election.
Regarding the time limit of the election schedule, he said, we will announce the schedule when the time comes and then you will also know the date. He said, you will know everything when the time comes. We have an action plan, although I would not call it a roadmap.
Earlier this month, Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus announced that the country’s general election would be held in early April next year.
