‘Sonam Wangchuk’s arrest will worsen the situation’, this person made a big claim

Reacting to the arrest of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, Leh Apex Body (Lab) Legal Advisor Haji Ghulam Mustafa said on Friday (September 26, 2025) that this step will make the situation more complicated rather than bringing general status in the Union Territory, as Wangchuk is a world-famous person who is a world-famous person, who is convinced in non-violence.

Ghulam said that the arrest of a person cannot be stopped for state status and the ongoing agitation for his four-formulas, including inclusion of Ladakh in the sixth schedule of the Constitution, but his arrest could be an obstacle in the ongoing conversation between Ladakh representatives and the central government.

Wangchuk’s arrest indiscriminate decision

Mustafa told ‘PTI’, ‘We have also heard about Wangchuk’s arrest, which is a very unfortunate and indispensable decision taken by the government. On Wednesday, the nuisance, in which four protesters lost their lives and 90 others were injured, I do not see any role in them.

He said that Wangchuk’s arrest has been made on baseless allegations, which can hurt the people of Ladakh emotionally and this arrest cannot be called an intelligent decision. Mustafa, a legal advisor to the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), said, “He is an internationally acclaimed person who is known for his work in social activism and education and climate.”

Haji Ghulam Mustafa accused the government

He said, ‘When you arrest someone of his stature, what message are you giving to people that you can arrest anyone.’ LAB and KDA have been jointly leading protests in support of their demands for the last four years. Mustafa alleged that Wangchuk’s arrest could be a trick to derail the conversation focused on his demands.

Mohammad Ramadan, vice-president of Anjuman-e-Moinul Islam, a constituent of LAB, said that this arrest is the result of a systematic campaign conducted by right-wing activists and a particular class of media, which aims to defame them and take action against the people.

Firm belief in the Constitution of India

Ramadan accused the central government of experimenting with the policies adopted in other places to intimidate the leadership in Ladakh, saying, “He is the son of this soil, our hero, a leader who follows a Gandhian lifestyle and has firm faith in the Constitution of India.”

He said, ‘He was leading the movement in a peaceful manner through hunger strikes and foot march from Leh to Delhi. We all follow them. Instead of bringing a normal position in such steps, only the situation will be complicated.

Mustafa’s question about government’s decision

Earlier in the day, LAB co-chairman Chering Dorje also defended Wangchuk and said that in recent times, actions against him have raised many questions. Dorje questioned reporters, saying, ‘Wangchuk was running his institute for a long time, but now that he is part of the movement for the rights of the people, who inspired the government to take action against him at the same time? Did the government not know about these things earlier? ‘

He gave this response on the questions asked about the FCRA license of ‘Students Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh’ (Sekmol) established by Wangchuk on behalf of Wangchuk on the questions asked about the lease of land given to his HAIL Institute.
