The Trinamool Congress has opted out of the statements made by its MP Kalyan Banerjee and MLA Madan Mitra on the South Calcutta Law College gang rape case. A post from the party’s official X handle said, ‘The comments made by MP Kalyan Banerjee and MLA Madan Mitra about the heinous crime in South Calcutta Law College are his personal statements. The party separates itself from their statements and strongly condemns it. These ideas do not reflect the party’s thinking in this matter in any way. Our stance is firm; Our policy against crimes against women is of zero tolerance and we demand strict punishment for all those involved in this heinous crime.
TMC MP Mahua Moitra has also criticized their statements without naming Kalyan Banerjee and Madan Mitra. Reacting to TMC’s X post, Mahua Moitra wrote, ‘The hatred towards women in India is beyond the party line. What makes the Trinamool Congress different from other parties is that our party condemns these disgusting comments, no matter what such statements have been made by anyone. However, Kalyan Banerjee disagreeed with his party’s statement. He wrote in the social media post, ‘I completely disagree with the post done by Trinamool Congress on X. Is the party indirectly supporting those leaders who are saving these criminals? ‘

He further wrote, ‘Till immediate action is taken against the leaders responsible, there will be no real change from mere academic statements. The even more unfortunate thing is that some leaders who emerged after 2011 are themselves under question in such crimes. I also want to keep myself clear from those who are encouraging or protecting these criminals. To understand the intentions behind my words and statements in the true sense, a certain level of moral and intellectual understanding is required- which unfortunately disappears. ‘

In this gang rape case, Monojo Mishra, leader of the student wing of Trinamool Congress, is the main accused. At the same time, the police have appointed two other students of South Calcutta Law College, Jab Ahmed (age 19 years) and Pramit Mukherjee (age 20 years) and a guard Pinaki Banerjee in the case. The Trinamool Congress of Monojo College is the former president of the Congress Students’ Council Unit and is allegedly the organizational secretary of the South Kolkata Wing of TMC’s student organization. These four have been arrested. When the media personnel questioned Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee about this gang rape, he said, ‘What can be done if a friend rapes his friend. Will police be deployed in schools and educational institutions now? This was done by the students with another student. Who will protect her (victim)? Who does all this crime and tampering? If some men do this, then women should fight against? Women should fight against these perverted men.

Trinamool Congress leader Madan Mitra said on Saturday that the gang rape incident in Kolkata has given a message to the girls that if the college is closed and someone is offering them to give them posts in the student union, then they should not go. If that girl does not go there, then all this would not happen. If the girl would have told someone before leaving or had taken two-four friends with her, then it would not have come. The person who carried out this dirty act took advantage of the opportunity. A 24 -year -old student was gangraped on 25 June at South Calcutta Law College in the town of Kolkata. According to the statement given to the victim’s police, when she reached the campus to fill the form for the examination, she was attacked. He was forcibly taken to the guard room, where his clothes were taken off and raped.

According to the victim student, she had rejected the marriage proposal of Monojo Mishra, due to which she raped her. According to the victim, Monojit recorded this entire act in her mobile phone and later used the video to blackmail and threaten her. According to the police, the allegations were confirmed in the medical examination and the rape with the student, the bite on the body and the nail scratches were found. The police have not ruled out the possibility of more arrests while continuing the investigation of the case. Regarding the arrest of the college guard Pinaki Banerjee, the police said that he was present in the campus at the time of the incident and left the student alone on the instructions of the accused and left the guard room. The guard did not help her despite the woman repeatedly pleading for help. It was the responsibility of the guard to inform the college administration or police about the incident, but he did not do so. During interrogation, his negligence was confirmed, after which he was arrested.
