Sri lanka on Kachchatheevu island: India’s neighboring country Sri Lanka has made a big statement on the island of the disputed Kachtivu on Friday (July 4, 2025). Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijita Herath said on Friday that her country has no intention of leaving the island of Kachhativu.
Sri Lankan External Affairs Minister Vijita Herath said in a conversation with Sirasa TV on Thursday (July 3, 2025), “We have a diplomatic medium to resolve the issue, but it is certain that Sri Lanka will never agree to leave the Kachhativu Island.”
Foreign Minister said on the arrest of Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan water area
The Sri Lankan Foreign Minister said this in response to a question related to the incidents of continuous arrest of Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan water area. Fishermen of India and Sri Lanka inadvertently enter each other’s water area and are arrested there.
The issue of arrest arms from an agreement during the Emergency in 1975
India Foreign Minister S.K. Jaishankar had said on 27 June that the issue of arresting Indian fishermen on behalf of Sri Lanka has arisen from an agreement made during the Emergency in 1975. Under that agreement, fishing rights were abandoned in some specific areas.
Political debate between BJP and Congress on raw
At the same time, Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Herath postponed the issue, saying that the rhetoric on the raw issue is a political debate between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition party Congress party at the Center.
Sri Lankan Foreign Minister accused of Indian fishermen accused
Herath accused Indian fishermen of entering Sri Lanka’s maritime border for fishing near Kachhativu Island. He said that they not only rob resources but also harm sea plants. He said, “But we definitely know that the Government of India is not in favor of continuous illegal fishing in Sri Lankan water area.”
