A big accident took place in Jagannath Rath Yatra in Puri, Orissa. In front of Gundicha temple at around 4 am on Sunday, there was a stampede in the crowd near the Nandighosh chariot of Lord Jagannath. During this time, three devotees were reported to have died and more than 50 injuries.
Those who died in the accident were Basanti Sahu (36), Premkanti Mahanti (78) and Prabhati Das. All the bodies are kept in Puri Medical College.
The accident occurred when a huge crowd gathered to visit the chariots. During this time, the stampede took place and people were crushed by falling. It is being told that there were not enough police or security forces deployed where there was a stampede.
The chariots of Lord Balabhadra and Subhadra had already reached Shraddabali (ending site). Later, Lord Jagannath’s chariot reached Gundicha temple at his aunt.
Hundreds of devotees deteriorated on Friday
Earlier on Friday (June 27), the health of the devotees had deteriorated from 625 due to increased pressure around the chariot of Goddess Subhadra. According to the administration, 70 were admitted to the hospital. The condition of 9 of these is critical.
