State status, demand for sixth schedule and reservation … Violence erupted during protests in Ladakh on these demands, know how the situation now?

Things remain tense after recent movements and violent incidents over state status, sixth schedule, employment and regional security demands in Ladakh region. Violence erupted during the protest at Leh on 24 September 2025, in which four people died and more than 80 were injured. After this, the administration detained a large number of youth, out of which 30 have been released while the remaining 40 youth are currently in judicial custody and will be released as per the court order.

In a statement issued by the Chief Secretary of Ladakh, it has been said that the government will not put any innocent or wandering youth in any trouble. Also, the administration clearly says that some leaders provoked the youth for personal and political benefits, which is under investigation. In the investigation, the police claimed that there are many such evidences, which will highlight the role of these leaders.

Negotiations with Ladakh leaders

The government also said that positive conversations with the leaders of Ladakh were going on continuously. A high -level meeting for 6 October was scheduled, before the meetings were scheduled on 25 and 26 September. Meanwhile, violence occurred in the last days due to the intensity of the performance. The main reason for this was to derail the process of dialogue by some leaders and to continue the hunger strike.

Curfew imposed in the city

The administration claims that if the support of the conversation was done in time, the incidents could have been postponed. The administration referred to the incidents of changes in reservations regarding the future of the youth. ST reservation was increased from 45% to 85%, with 4% LAC reservation and 1% for SC. Women have mentioned solid steps in local councils such as 1/3 reservation reservation, state language status to Bhoti and Purugi languages, and the introduction of recruitment of 1385 non-gazette posts under the accelerated recruitment process. Due to sensitive conditions formed after the protest, the administration imposed curfew in the city and internet services were also temporarily closed. However, the situation is gradually becoming normal and the Ladakh Ladakh Governor has assured to lift all the sanctions soon.

Land Revenue Law of Ladakh

The government alleged that confusion is being spread by some organizations by creating words like ‘population cropping’, ‘cultural elimination’, whereas there is no such reality. The government made it clear that the land revenue laws of Ladakh are being made in the interest of the people and the rights of local councils will not be allowed to be deducted. On issues like increasing Lok Sabha seat, solar park, industrialization, environment, the government says that no decision will be made without the consent of the local community and Ladakh will be developed as a ‘carbon neutral’ area. The administration said that the government, especially to fulfill the expectations of the youth, will resume the dialogue process soon. The government assured the protection of land, resources, jobs and cultural identity of Ladakis.
