Kolkata law college rape case: A case of gang rape has come to light from a student inside South Kolkata Law College located in Kasba area of South Kolkata. According to the police, the incident took place in the college campus between 7:30 pm and 10:50 pm on June 25. On the complaint of the victim, an FIR has been lodged at Kasba police station and investigation has been started. Three accused have been arrested in this case, including one alumnus and two current students.
Identification of accused
The arrested accused have been identified as Monjun Mishra (31 years), former college unit president, Jab Ahmed (19 years) and Pramit Mukherjee alias Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20 years). Mishra and Ahmed were arrested on the evening of 26 June near Talbagan Crossing. At the same time, Pramit was caught from his house at 12:30 am on June 27. Mobile phones of all three have also been seized. The court has sent the three accused to 5 days police custody.
The incident took place in the college campus
According to police sources, this alleged gang rape incident took place inside the college building. The victim’s initial medical examination has been done and statements of several witnesses have been recorded. The scene has been secured and now a forensic investigation is awaited.
All three accused presented in court, police custody sanctioned till Tuesday
The three accused arrested were produced in Alipur court on Thursday. The police had demanded 14 days of custody, but the court ordered them to be sent to police custody by next Tuesday.
Opposition’s sharp attack on Mamta government
The Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly Shubhendu Adhikari targeted the government over the incident. He said, “The entire Kolkata Police has been sent to Digha in the Rath Yatra. The Chief Minister no longer has the right to continue in his post. We will raise this issue.”
BJP leader Amit Malviya alleged- ‘A person associated with TMC is also included’
BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya described the incident as “terrible” and said that it includes alumni and two college staff. He claimed that a Trinamool Congress member could also play a role in this case. He accused West Bengal of making West Bengal a “bad dream” for women.
What did the Mayor Firhad Hakim say
Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim described the incident as “very serious”. He said that he is not fully aware of the matter yet, but after receiving the report from the police, he will give a statement.
