Sukhbir Singh Badal has again been elected president of the Shiromani Akali Dal. During the organizational elections on Saturday, he was elected unopposed for the post by 524 Akali Dal representatives from Punjab and other states. Sukhbir Badal was first elected President of SAD after Prakash Singh Badal in 2008, since then he remained the party chief till 2024. He resigned from his post last year to follow religious punishment.
The inner sources of the party revealed that Sukhbir was both favorite and only candidate for the post. The organizational elections held in Amritsar were held after the conclusion of the Akali Dal’s three -month membership campaign. Sukhbir Badal resigned as SAD President on November 16, 2024 after Akal Takht declared ‘Tanakhaiya’ (guilty of religious misconduct). In the directive issued by the Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh of Akal Takht on December 2, 2024, the then SAD leadership, including Sukhbir Badal, was considered unworthy to lead the party.
