Supreme Court News: The Supreme Court Collegium recommended the elevation of Patna High Court Chief Justice K Vinod Chandran as Supreme Court Justice. The collegium of five judges led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna recommended the name of Justice Chandran in a meeting held on Tuesday (January 7, 2025). He was appointed Justice of Kerala High Court for the first time on November 8, 2011.
Has been a High Court judge for 11 years
Justice Chandran was promoted and appointed Chief Justice of Patna High Court. He is working on this post from March 29, 2023. If the Central Government approves the recommendation, the number of Supreme Court judges will increase to 33. The total sanctioned number of judges in the Supreme Court is 34.
Supreme Court Justice CT Ravikumar retired on January 5. “He (Justice Chandran) has served as a High Court judge for more than 11 years and as Chief Justice of a major High Court for more than a year,” the collegium said in its resolution. During his long tenure as Justice and Chief Justice of the High Court, he has gained significant experience in diverse areas of law.
K Chandran is at 13th place in the seniority list.
Apart from the Chief Justice, the collegium includes Justice BR Gavai, Justice Surya Kant, Justice Hrishikesh Roy and Justice Abhay S. Oka is included. The Collegium has said that Justice Chandran is ranked 13th in the combined all-India seniority list of High Court judges. In another resolution of the collegium, it has been recommended to transfer Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay of Bombay High Court to Delhi High Court.
Justice Vibhu Bakhru is serving as the acting Chief Justice of this court after the then Chief Justice of Delhi High Court, Manmohan, was elevated to the apex court. The collegium has also recommended transfer of Telangana High Court Chief Justice Alok Aradhe to Bombay High Court. The collegium has approved the proposal to give permanent appointment to Gauhati High Court’s Additional Justice Kardak Ate and Justice Mridul Kumar Kalita in the same court.
