Supreme Court implemented reservation roster in direct recruitment and promotion, now reservation will be available on the basis of posts

The Supreme Court has taken a historic step and has implemented the roster system for SC/ST reservation. After this, reservation will be available in the court according to the posts. Till now, total staff number was being reservation. The Supreme Court has implemented the circular issued by the Central Government on 2 July 1997 after 28 years.

After the implementation of this system, 15 percent posts will be reserved in the Supreme Court in direct recruitment of staff and 15 percent for Scheduled Castes and 7.5 percent for Scheduled Tribes. This system has become effective from 23 June 2025. It is necessary to clarify here that this arrangement of reservation is for the posts of court employees and officers like Registrar, Court Assistant, Court Attendant, Librarian. This is not applicable to judges.

The Supreme Court on several occasions in the last 28 years heard the roster system of reservation and gave decisions, but had not yet implemented it on its own. This big step has been taken during the tenure of Chief Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai. Justice Gawai himself is from the Scheduled Castes class and has seen social discrimination closely. In this 54 -page roster system, it is explained in detail how the reservation system in appointment and promotion will be applicable.
