Jagjit Singh Dallewal: The Supreme Court has raised questions on the attitude of the Punjab government towards farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been on a fast unto death for 39 days. The court has said that the attitude of the Punjab government is not going to resolve the deadlock. However, the court has given more time to the Punjab government to shift Dallewal to the hospital. The matter will be heard further on Monday, January 6. The court has asked the Punjab Chief Secretary and DGP to file an affidavit.
A bench headed by Supreme Court Justice Surya Kant said, "Punjab government officials are making such statements in the media as if the court wants Dallewal’s fast to be broken. We have made it clear that we have no objection to their fast. Our concern is only about them not getting medical help. He can continue the fast even with medical help."
Punjab government failed to convince
The court said that Punjab government has failed to convince Dallewal. Advocate General Gurminder Singh, appearing for the Punjab government, said that officers are present at the protest site to convince the farmers. But he is not agreeing. He says that he will take medical help only if the Center takes initiative for talks.
Ask to hand over copy of the petition to the Central Government
Hearing During this time another petition was placed in the Supreme Court. It said that the Central Government had earlier assured to consider the Minimum Support Price (MSP) guarantee. This is the main demand of the farmers’ movement. Therefore, the court should direct the government to consider this and take a decision. On this, the court asked the petitioner to hand over a copy of the petition to the Central Government. Justice Ujjwal Bhuiyan, member of the bench, said that if the central government gives some assurances, the deadlock can end.
