The Supreme Court on Thursday (February 20, 2025) told the Maharashtra government that state officials may be under pressure, but not the judiciary. The court made this comment on the question of the Maharashtra government on the truth of the report of the judicial officer linked to the allocation of e-rickshaw license at the hill station Matheran.
The Maharashtra government’s lawyer said that the report of the judicial officer could not be completely factually correct. After this, Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai, who was in the back with Justice Augustine George Christ, said, “Your officials can be under pressure, but not our judiciary.”
Automobiles are not allowed in Matheran, about 83 km from Mumbai. The state counsel said that it would be appropriate that the officers start the process of license allocation afresh. The bench gave the state government two weeks to bring a proposal to reconsider the process of e-rickshaw allocation.
The Supreme Court said that the report has been prepared by a responsible senior judicial officer. The court will next hear the case on March 19. While hearing the case in November last year, the Supreme Court had asked the officials of Maharashtra about alloting e-rickshaw licenses at the hill station.
On January 10 last year, the Supreme Court said that e-rickshaws will only be given to the rickshaws by hand so that their employment loss can be compensated. In April 2024, the court limited the number of e-rickshaws in Matheran to 20 till further orders.
