The family was called on the pretext of religious ritual According to the complaint lodged in the FRI, on 1 October 2017, Shantisagar called the victim, including the victim, Mahavir Digambar Jain Sub-temple at Timaliyavad, Surat, on the pretext of a religious ritual. Arrangements were made for the family to stay in the temple itself. Accused Jain Muni was staying for Chaturmas in Surat during this period. The victim alleges that during this time Jainmuni Shantisagar called her to her room on the pretext of chanting and raped her, asking her to have no untoward.

On the second day, the rape was revealed when the victim’s health deteriorated. After this, the family lodged a complaint with the Athawalines police station in Surat. Shantisagar was taken into custody in October itself after the rape was confirmed in medical.

The accused said- physical relations were made with consent After the arrest, Shanti Sagar (49) claimed that he was implicated. During medical, he told the doctor that I have known the girl for 5-6 months. She came to Surat to meet for the first time. Timaliyavad Nanpura had formed relations with the consent of the girl in Dharamshala.

Jain monk also said that he did this for the first time in life. The doctor asked the sage- you are a monk, why did you do this? The sage bowed his head on this. This has been recorded by the doctor in the Medico legal case register.

Who is Shanti Sagar? Shantisagar lived with his tauji in Guna District from childhood to youth. Earlier his name was Girraj Sharma. His family lived in Kota. Father Sajjanlal Sharma was the confectioner there. Girraj came in contact with Jain saints in Mandsaur at the age of 22. Leaving his studies incomplete, he became a Shantisagar Maharaj from Girraj after taking initiation.
