In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister of State for Education Dr. Sukanta Majumdar informed that 21 institutions have been included in the list of fake universities on the UGC website and 12 fake universities have been closed since 2014. Asked in the Lok Sabha whether the Commission has declared these 21 universities fake and what action the government has taken on it, the minister replied that it is the responsibility of the state governments to maintain law and order.
What was taken?
The central government has requested the Chief Secretaries of all states and union territories to take legal action to close these 21 fake institutions. Take appropriate steps against those who are cheating students by calling themselves universities, distributing degrees and adding university words to their names. Following this instruction, 12 fake universities have been closed since 2014.
Identification of fake universities continues
The government has also requested all the states and union territories that if any other fake universities are being operated in their area, which are not included in the UGC list, then also inform them. Christ New Testament Dend University of Andhra Pradesh at Fake University, Bible Open University of India, Delhi’s All India Institute of Public and Physical Health Science University, Commercial University Limited, United Nations University, Vocational University, Indian Institute of Science and Engineering, Vishwakarma Open University for Self Employment, Spiritual University and others are included.
Government did it
Apart from this, the government has issued public notices from social media, UGC websites and other means to warn students, parents and general public to be careful with these fake universities.
The government has registered an FIR against many self -styled institutions and fake universities. Also, they have been issued a show cause notice or warning, so that they stop the process of illegally distributing degrees.
