The Government of India has informed in the Rajya Sabha that no trademark application has been approved so far for the words ‘Operation Sindoor’ or ‘OPS Sindoor’. This information has come out in response to the questions asked by MP Sagarika Ghosh.

Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasad said that the ministry is keeping an eye on all the trademark applications related to these words. He said that no application has been approved so far. Although an application has been withdrawn. The withdrawn application was filed by Reliance Industries Limited.

For the past few days, there was a race to apply trademark using the name ‘Operation Sindoor’. Many companies and individuals tried to take a trademark on words related to this name, whether it is products, movies, TV programs, media or other business items.

The government said that 46 such trademark applications are still pending, which has demanded to register words like ‘Operation Sindoor’, ‘OPS Sindoor’, and ‘Mission Sindoor’. These applicants include private companies, TV manufacturers, food producers, beauty products and other businessmen. These applications have been recorded in different classes. Apart from these, names and people with names and logo have also been recorded with names and logo like ‘Mission Sindoor’, ‘Sindoor TV’, ‘Sindoor: The Revenge’.

Responding to the Rajya Sabha, the government also clarified that no internal advice, guidelines or circulars related to the names of military operations have been issued. All applications are viewed under the existing Trade Marx Act, 1999 and Trade Marx Rules, 2017.

In the midst of this whole incident, an important thing was also revealed that the Ministry of Defense has officially demanded special legal protection to the logo of ‘Operation Sindoor’. This security has been sought under the ‘Embelliums and Names (Prevention of Improver Use) Act, 1950’.
