Peeter Navaro, the trade advisor of President Donald Trump, is constantly making anti -India rhetoric amidst a strong relationship with the US. He accused India of promoting the Russia-Ukraine war, and also said that the path of peace in Ukraine passes through New Delhi. But now Navaro is facing criticism in his own country.
America-India relations in danger
Ivan A., Asia Specialist and former advisor to two US foreign ministers. Fagenbam has strictly criticized the sharp rhetoric of Peter Navaro against India. He has described the Trade Advisor Peter Navarro of the White House as ‘a unbridled cannon’, whose statements are threatening the development of the US-India relations for decades of progress.

After Navaro’s statement that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is responsible for the war of Russia in Ukraine, Figenbam said in a post, “These people have ruined 25 years of hard and bilateral hard work to make America-India relations fruitful.” He further said, ‘The path of peace in Ukraine certainly does not go through New Delhi, and it is absolutely absurd.’
Funding center was told to India
Senior Business Advisor, Navaro, in Trump administration, has taken a renewed aggressive stance against India and has linked oil purchases from Russia with the ongoing war in Ukraine. In public statements including an interview and several social media posts, Navaro accused India of converting himself into a ‘oil funding center’ for Kremlin and claimed that Indian refiners were earning profits from black marketing oil while Ukrainians are dying.
Navaro defended the imposition of 50 percent tariffs on Indian goods by the Trump administration, with 25 percent tariff for wrong trade practice and 25 percent tariffs were levied with Russia for national security concerns related to India’s defense and energy deal.
According to Navaro, India’s stake in Russian oil imports has increased from one percent before 2022 to more than 30 percent i.e. 1.5 million barrels per day. He alleged that Indian refineries are exporting more than 10 lakh barrels of refined products every day, which is increasing the profit of Russia. He wrote, ‘India now exports more than 10 lakh barrels of refined petroleum per day, which is more than half of the amount of Russian crude oil imported on its behalf.’
‘Navaro’s statement beyond history’
Figenbam dismissed both the tone and meaning of the claims of Navaro and described him as different from history. He criticized India for calling India a ‘strategic free -creator’ and described it as unnecessary and misleading. Figenbam said, ‘Nowadays history, references and politics do not matter much for those who make policy about India. All this is either unorganized and unauthorized, which is quite worrisome, or authorized, which will make it a policy.

He further warned that the relationship may be ‘more and more postponed, but if no one ends it soon, it may potentially disintegrate, and said that the partnership may have to change the administration to’ bring back more productive paths’.
India has denied the American tariff and said that the decisions related to its oil purchase have stood on the foundation of economic needs. India has been continuously emphasizing that China or the European Union are not being imposed equal tariffs from the US, while the two countries have comprehensive energy and business relations with Russia.
