‘Make in India’ and ‘Make in America’ are both ambitious initiatives. Which have been started to promote manufacturing and strengthen self-reliance in their respective countries. The goal of both these schemes is to promote domestic industries, reduce dependence on imports and create jobs. Even there is no problem of problems. But President Donald Trump’s extreme ambition has made ‘Make in America’ a trade war of United States. They want to achieve the purpose of ‘Make in America’ through tariff war.
If ‘Make in America’ would have been just a business agenda of America, but Trump has turned into this Jio strategic agenda and to achieve this goal, he wants to run the foreign policy of the countries of the world. India’s procurement of crude oil from Russia is a part of Trump’s policy, instead of seeing it from the glasses of Ukraine Jung, instead of seeing the glasses of the world’s most populous country.
Trump feels that the US has given non -necessary concessions to its business partners in the last few years. For this, he blames the policies of former President and Democratic leader who is responsible for Biden’s policies. They want to reverse it under any circumstances.
From chips to ship all in America …
As such, Trump started the ‘Make in America’ policy in 2017 during his first term. But with the second innings in 2025, Trump became aggressive and stubborn about this policy.
The goal of this policy is “from chips to ships” to make everything in America. 21 trillion economy and advanced technology, world -class infrastructure and innovation with per capita income of $ 41,071 are the strength of America. This strength also gives America the right to do not consider international treaties, international institutions and prevailing business beliefs.
This is the reason why Trump put 25 percent tariff on India. Apart from this, he also talked about imposing a fine on the purchase of oil from Russia on India. So that US import products become expensive from India and companies are forced to be forced to local production.
Trump’s policies become ridiculous when they try to curb India’s right to trade. On the night of August 4, Trump said about India that he will put more tariffs on India. Explaining the reason for this, he said that India is buying a large amount of crude oil from Russia and is earning profits by selling it in the open market. Trump alleged that India does not care about the people being killed in Ukraine.

India did not even delay in responding to President Trump’s unrestrained statement. India said that at the beginning of Ukraine war, the US itself was encouraging India to import such imports so that prices could remain stable in the international energy market.
India said that the purpose of importing our crude oil from Russia is to provide the facility to Indian consumers to buy fuel according to their ability. This is an important requirement that has arisen from global conditions. India said that the countries who are criticizing India in this matter are doing business from Russia themselves.
Foreign and trade policy
By connecting foreign policy with trade policy, Trump wants to make his own mark in international forums, then through ‘Make in America’, he is trying to strengthen the domestic economy.
Calling the ‘Make in America’, Trump said that the aim of America is to bring back its production capacity to the country, reduce foreign dependence and protect American workers. He described foreign trade deficit and “unfair global trade” as a national emergency and ordered a minimum 10% tariff to all countries.
According to Trump, ‘Made in America’ is not just slogan, but is a priority of economic and national security. They believe that cars, equipment and other items will be made in the US only by changing these tariffs and policies, which will provide good salary jobs to Americans and will strengthen America’s industrial base.
Trump clarified that this step is necessary for US competition, autonomy and security.
America’s global lead in semiconductor, aviation and medical equipment. In 2017-2020, Trump’s policies increased jobs in steel and automotive sector. Tariff and Tax Relief encouraged companies to invest in the US.
Will America be able to run without India?
But playing the dank of ‘Make in America’, Trump forgets that this campaign has some limitations.
Indian talent, cheap labor is India’s strength. The wages from India to America are 3 to 5 times more. Efficient labor is a challenge for America. In the field of software, management, IT, the coin of Indians runs all over the world.
The supply chain of global trade has been disrupted due to American supply. Because of this, many companies have turned to India. India has established itself in the global supply chain on the basis of cheap labor and low production costs, especially in auto, textile, food processing, mobile and electronics sector. Schemes like PLI (PRODUCTION LINKED Inscent) are promoting manufacturing.

Companies like Apple are now insisting on producing their products in India. Apple’s production in India reached $ 14 billion in 2024, which shows India’s capacity.
This was not possible with America’s labor cost. Make in India vs Make in America is an important statement of former Indian Commerce Secretary Anup Wadhawan. He has said that, “Make in India ‘is not a major threat to’ Make in India ‘from America’s new tariff policy, because the US economy is not relatively favorable for big manufacturing. There is a lot of cost and wage- for example, if a iPhone is made in America, it can cost up to $ 3,000- $ 4,000.”
Even though the US is ahead of India in technology -based products like semiconductor and AI, it cannot compete with India or China in the production of cheap goods. India’s position in global trade is strong. The partnership with Russia, Japan and ASEAN adds it to the global supply chain.
This step of Trump and American policy makers is impractical. It hurts the policy of free trade. It is very ridiculous that America used to be an advocate of this policy.
America will have to knock the door of Taiwan for a semiconductor. For rare economy, business will have to be done from China and cheap consumer goods will have to depend on countries like India.
If America only keeps on making ‘Make in America’, then American consumers may have to face double hit. One, due to high production costs, goods will become expensive there, on the other hand, foreign goods in America will become very expensive even with high tariffs.
Due to which there is a risk of inflation.
If the game of tariff goes long, then in response, countries like China, India and Europe can also apply counter -tariffs on American goods. This can affect America’s foreign trade. This can cause damage to American exports. India is looking for new markets, while America’s protectionist policies can isolate it.
