The Civil work you are watching in the video, the Tulbul navigation barrage in the vuller lake in North Kashmir. It was launched in the early 1980s, but had to leave it under the pressure of Pakistan citing the Indus Water Treaty. Now that the Indus Water Agreement has been temporarily suspended, I wonder if we will be able to resume this project. This will give us the benefit of permission to use Jhelum for navigation. This will also improve the power production of downstream power projects. It will be benefited especially in winter.

Tulbul project is at the mouth of Wular Lake

The Tulbul Project was a 440 feet long shipping lock-cum-control structure at the mouth of the Wular Lake on the Jhelum River. A storage capacity of 3 lakh billion cubic meters was prepared here to stop the water of Jhelum.

The Tulbul project was spent ₹ 20 crores at the moment, but due to frequent floods in Jhelum, construction was buried in the soil. Due to this, the water of Jhelum could not stop in Kashmir and Pakistan kept flowing.

The next day of the Pahalgam terror attack, a meeting of Cabinet Committee on Security i.e. CCS was held on 23 April under the chairmanship of PM Modi. There were 5 major decisions against Pakistan. The most important of these was to postpone the Indus Water Agreement.

Indus Water Agreement was held in 1960, stopped after 65 years In 1960, the agreement was reached between Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru and Pakistan President Ayub Khan. In the agreement, 6 rivers flowing from the Indus basin were divided into the eastern and western parts.

India has full authority over the water of Ravi, Beas and Sutlej. India can stop India’s 20% water of Indus, Chenab and Jhelum rivers in the western part.

Pakistan had said- If the Indus stops water, the Act of war will be The National Security Committee (NCS) held a meeting on 24 April in Islamabad. In this, Pakistan postponed all bilateral agreements between the two countries. It also included the Shimla Agreement in 1972.

Pakistan had said that if India stops the Indus Water Agreement, it will be considered as the act of war. Pakistan’s sovereignty and security will be strongly responded to in all areas. We condemn any terrorist activity.
