Chandan Gupta Murder Case: The Special ANI Court in Lucknow has given its verdict regarding the murder case of Chandan Gupta of Kasganj, Uttar Pradesh. In this murder case, the NIA special court convicted 28 accused and acquitted two others. In this case, the NIA court will announce the punishment on Friday (January 3, 2025). The accused had applied in the High Court to stay the legality and hearing of the NIA court, after which the Lucknow bench rejected the petition.
Murder during Tiranga Yatra
Justice Rajiv Singh’s bench in Lucknow had rejected the petition questioning the NIA court hearing. On January 26, 2018, Chandan Gupta was murdered while taking out the Tiranga Yatra in Kasganj, which led to violence between the two groups. Several shops, two buses and a car were burnt in the violence. After this, the politics of UP as well as the entire country became heated.
The hearing was completed only on 25 October 2024
This case from Kasganj was transferred to Etah District Court and then to NIA Court, Lucknow in 2022. The NIA court of Additional District Judge Vivekananda Sharan Tripathi had completed the hearing of the case on October 23, 2024 and had reserved the order for October 25. 18 accused had filed a petition in the High Court demanding transfer of the case to Kasganj, due to which the decision was stuck.
Chandan Gupta’s father Sushil Gupta had registered a case at Kasganj police station on the night of 26 January 2018. Chandan alias Abhishek Gupta along with his brother Vivek Gupta and other friends had participated in the Tricolor Yatra taken out on the occasion of Republic Day. In this case, NIA had filed the first charge sheet on 26 April 2018. 12 witnesses were presented in the court, in which the deceased’s father Sushil Kumar Gupta and Saurabh Pal were specially presented.
