selection process
Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) invites candidates for important posts in Group A and B in various government departments including Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and Indian Revenue Service (IRS). Civil Services Examination is conducted every year for selection. UPSC CSE consists of three stages: Prelims, Mains and Interview. Objective type questions are asked in prelims exam whereas in mains exam the paper of the candidates is descriptive type. Thereafter, the candidates shortlisted in the main stage proceed to the final stage, which consists of a personality test i.e. interview.

Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination consists of two objective type papers of total 400 marks and acts as a screening tool to select candidates for the next stage. The marks of the preliminary examination do not affect the final ranking, but approximately twelve to thirteen times more candidates than the number of vacancies available will be selected from among those who qualify the examination to appear in the Civil Services (Main) Examination.
