Un on aids: The United Nations AIDS Agency (UNAIDS) warned on Friday (7 February) that if US President Donald Trump’s government stops funding the global funding of HIV/AIDS programs, more than six million people in the next four years have risked their lives in the next four years. Can fall
Speaking to reporters in Geneva, UNED’s Deputy Executive Director Christine Stegeling said that the situation of HIV/AIDS treatment programs has become extremely unstable since the Trump administration banned foreign aid funds.
Un sayss that if we stop giving billions of our tax dollars to Africa via usaid, 6.3 million patients with aids will die
Maybe just maybe other countries should help as well, we can’t be asked to pay for everything.pic.twitter.com/pimiyhiosf– Johnny midnight ⚡️ (@its_the_dr) February 7, 2025
Effect on HIV/AIDS programs
The Trump administration banned foreign aid for 90 days after taking charge on 20 January 2025. A few days later, the US State Department exempted the life saving HIV/AIDS program Pepfar (President’s Emergency Plan for Aids Relief), but despite this, there is uncertainty about the future of the program. Stegeling said, “There is a lot of confusion at the community level how the discount will be implemented. We are watching major disruption in delivery of treatment services.” He also expressed concern that the decrease in funding could increase new cases of HIV infection.
63 lakh people threat of death
Stegeling warned that if the financial assistance of PEPFAR is not rehearsed from 2025 to 2029, the deaths from AIDS could increase by 400 per cent. “These are 63 million AIDS related deaths that will be in the future … any cut, any stagnation, can be disastrous for us,” he said.
Most loss to community clinics
Stegeling reported that 5,000 public health workers in Ethiopia were contracted by American funding, but now these contracts have been abolished. Community clinics, which are completely dependent on American aid, are most affected. He said, “If funding stops, many people will not come forward for treatment, which can increase new cases of HIV infection.”
Global AIDS Crisis
UNEDs also say that American donations are important for HIV/AIDS programs operating in 70 countries. These programs are leading the global efforts to eliminate AIDS as a public health crisis by 2030. The Trump administration says that it is reviewing all foreign aid programs to see that they are in line with their “America First” policy. Meanwhile, UNAds have called for intervention from UN member countries.
