New Delhi. Former captain of the Indian cricket team Virat Kohli’s decision to retire from Test cricket was shocking for many people. At the same time, former Indian bowling coach Paras Mhambre believes that this batting superstar must have felt that his red-ball cricket time is over. 36 -year -old Kohli retired from this format a few days after goodbye to Rohit Sharma’s test.

MHMBRES believes that both Kohli and Rohit realized that they were struggling in the longest format. This meant that he did not have much time left now. Kohli’s Test average had fallen below 50 in recent years and his weakness against the balls outside the off stump became an open secret. On the other hand, Rohit’s struggle was such that the former captain had taken out himself from the fifth Test of the tour of Australia in 2024-25.

MHAMBRE told Hindustan Times, “Virat had no five years of Test cricket … Given by his (Kohli and Rohit), he must have felt that it was time. He always says how much he could be valuable in his contribution. And sometimes it is a matter of inspiration. Perhaps they could not inspire that format to play that format. Had to think and both of these players had selfless thinking. ”

Both Kohli and Rohit have retired from Test and T20, but they will be available for ODIs and will be their possible goal to represent India in the 2027 World Cup. MHMBRES believes that this decision will now allow both of them to focus on only one format where they can still prove to be important for the Indian team.

“Sometimes you are not mentally ready to go through that struggle. If I am not 100%, I would honestly say that I am good in a format. Let me focus on another format, in which I can be more useful for the team,”
