Former India head coach Ravi Shastri believes that Washington Sundar has the ability to become India’s next Test all -rounder. Shastri has described Sundar as a good bowler as well as a naturally talented batsman in domestic conditions.
I have liked the game of Washington from the beginning. When I saw him for the first time, I said that he is a wonderful player and he has the ability to become an all -rounder of India for many years.
Ravi Shastri believes that Washington should have played more matches with red balls, especially on India’s turning pitches. He said:
He is just 25 years old. I think he should have played more Test cricket. In India, where the ball is taking turn, it can prove fatal, as he demonstrated against New Zealand. He performed better than some senior spinners and is also a good batsman.
Washington took 16 wickets in four innings in the 2024 domestic Test series against New Zealand. Shastri also praised his batting ability and said that he can also be sent up in the batting order. Shastri said:
He is naturally talented batsman. He is not the number eight batsman in the batting order. He can come to bat at number six very soon. Once he gains confidence, I feel that his game will improve further. He has retained his rhythm abroad as well. He is a fit player and he also makes a long spell and can also maintain control of need.
