On the second day of the ongoing India Today Conclave in Mumbai, there was talk on Artificial Intelligence. The AI Revolution: Many guests participated in Pivot or Perish, in which India was discussed in the race of AI. There is a big question about the Artificial Intelligence (AI) revolution in India whether the country has lagged behind in this global race. Experts believe that we may be 3 years behind America and China, but it is still “game on”. We have the power of more than one billion population, which means that any product or innovation will be used the most in India. This is an opportunity that we have to capitalize on.
‘Talent and data filled’
Fractal co-founder Srikanth Velamakni insisted that there is no shortage of AI talent in India. Every fourth person using AI in the world is Indian. Apart from this, India is also producing the most important thing for AI, ie digital data. We are among the top-3 countries writing research paper on AI. According to him, we do not just have to live as a ‘usecase’, but to become a ‘producer’.
‘Emphasis on infrastructure and investment’
Former NASCOM President R.K. Chandrasekhar admitted that China and America are ahead of us. However, India has a strong digital base ready. He said that being behind three years is also a ‘big leap’, and we have to walk at the double speed of the world. For success, government and private investment needs to be two to three times now. Also, India will also have to make its own citizen-centric AI Infrastructure Model.
‘Government and private sector partnership’
Deep Mukherjee of Boston Consulting Group said that AI’s game is still open. No country is very backward, because this journey has just started. He gave examples that more efficient than chat-GPT is China’s deepcick, which shows that the technology is changing rapidly. He admitted that the government has done a good job for digital and AI, but now private entity will have to come forward.
Way ahead: Quantum and Indian Model!
Experts agreed that large AI companies are using Indian data, due to which we are becoming a database for them. This situation has to change. Velmakni said that India should make a ‘Reasoning Model’ to eliminate its difficulties. Mukherjee suggested that we should talk not only on AI, but also on quantum technology. India’s AI model can bring major changes in areas like education and healthcare.
