The first day of the monsoon session of Parliament was ruckus. The opposition as usual attacked the government. But the most discussed, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from the post.
At the beginning of the monsoon session of Parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing the media outside the Parliament Building, committed the need for unity in the national interest. After this, during the session, the process of adjournment, walkout and opposition allegations started as usual.
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi alleged that he was prevented from speaking, while the ministers got a chance to speak openly. The priority of both the ruling party and the opposition included some important issues, such as the process of impeachment of High Court Judge Justice Yashwant Verma, Operation Sindoor and the discussion on special voter list revision (SIR) in Bihar before the election.
The process of Parliament seemed to be moving forward with normal barriers, but by the evening, the resignation of Vice President Dhankhar changed the entire incident. 74 -year -old Dhankar became the Vice President in August 2022 and his term was till 2027.
Now the question is whether Dhankhar’s alleged haste in Justice Yashwant Verma’s cash at home case was the real reason for his resignation? Was his steps against the government’s strategy that does not want to confront the judiciary at this time? This is a development that attracted everyone’s attention even in the stormy environment of Parliament.
Is there a big thing hidden behind the resignation of Dhankhar?
The official announcement of the resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar was made at 9:25 pm. He resigned by citing health.
But opposition leaders say that the matter is not just about health. The matter is something else. During the entire day’s meetings and Rajya Sabha proceedings, neither Dhankhar looked unwell nor did he indicate poor health.
As the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Dhankar was involved in the meetings of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) throughout the day and was preparing for some important announcements related to the judiciary.
Apart from the BAC meeting, he also met opposition leaders, but there was no indication from anywhere that he was in any trouble or resigning.
Congress MP Jairam Ramesh reacted to the development and said that the sudden resignation of the Chairman and Vice President of the Rajya Sabha is shocking. He said on the social media platform x that undoubtedly, Jagdeep Dhankhar should give the top priority to his health. But this completely unexpected resignation indicates a deep thing. However, it is not time to speculate.
Jairam Ramesh also told that Dhankar had decided a meeting of BAC for 1 pm on Tuesday afternoon. He said that Dhankhar had equally responded to both the government and the opposition. He held a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee at 1 pm yesterday and was going to make some important announcements related to the judiciary yesterday.
So in such a situation, the question arises that what happened on Monday that the Vice President who was preparing for the functioning of the House on July 22, he suddenly resigned on July 21 at 9:25 pm?
Rajya Sabha proceedings and money resignation
The Rajya Sabha proceedings were adjourned at around 4:36 pm on Monday. But before that there was a big incident. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar confirmed that he had received a proposal demanding the removal of Justice Yashwant Verma, which has signs of more than 50 MPs. Along with this, this process was formally started under the Judge (Investigation) Act.
During this, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said that a similar proposal has been brought in the Lok Sabha, then Dhankhar instructed the Secretariat to confirm this.
When Meghwal confirmed that this notice has been given in the Lok Sabha as well, Dhankhar asked the Secretariat to take necessary steps in this direction.
Dhankhar also clarified that if notices are given on the same day in both houses under the Judges (Inquiry) Act, then a joint committee is constituted to investigate the allegations and the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha together.
The proposal presented in the Lok Sabha was bipartisan. That is, it was signed by 152 MPs including BJP, while the proposal brought in the Rajya Sabha was signed only by the MPs of the opposition.
Many experts say that accepting the proposal brought by the opposition only in the Rajya Sabha, perhaps the ruling party passed away. The case of Justice Verma could become a decisive opportunity for Dhankhar, who was knowledgeable of the Constitution and strong in favor of judicial reforms.
Earlier, another interesting development happened when Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge was speaking during the debate on Operation Sindoor, then BJP’s Rajya Sabha leader JP Nadda intervened.
During this time, Nadda was heard pointing to Dhankhar that he would not go to the record, which I would say will only go to the record.
This Congress saw as an insult to Dhankar. However, Nadda later clarified that his comment was for the MPs of the opposition and not for the Chairman.
Lok Sabha MP from Bihar Pappu Yadav said that BJP does not care about the constitution or democratic values. Dhankar ji worked impartially and the same thing did not like the ruling party. He considered Nadda’s comment as a personal insult. This matter is not related to his health.
Nadda and Rijiju’s absence in Dhankhar meeting
The Congress party said that Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar was hurt by the absence of JP Nadda and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju in the second meeting of Rajya Sabha Business Advisory Committee (BAC).
Congress MP Vivek Tankha told that he was completely healthy. He conducted the proceedings of Parliament in a cheerful manner as usual. But something happened on Monday afternoon that hurt him and it is possible that the government has also been uncomfortable with this.
JP Nadda and Kiren Rijiju were present in the first meeting held at 12.30 pm. Since the meeting was an individual, it was decided that the second meeting would be called again at 4:30 pm. But in the second meeting, only Union Minister L.K. Murugan was present, while Nadda and Rijiju did not participate.
In short, the attitude of Dhankhar has been conflicting towards the judiciary. The government may have found it uncomfortable on the occasion of taking action against Justice Verma immediately on the occasion of taking action and in this case.
The judiciary believes that taking any action against Justice Verma in the cash at home case is completely their jurisdiction.
On July 21, the Supreme Court refused an immediate hearing on the petition seeking to register an FIR against Justice Verma. A bench of two judges headed by Chief Justice BR Gavai also reprimanded the petitioner advocate Mathews Nedmapara, as he had named Justice Verma of Allahabad High Court without a formal address like Justice.
Government sources told the media that Vice President Dhankhar had accepted the proposal against Justice Verma without taking Sarka into confidence. Dhankhar said in the resignation sent to President Draupadi Murmu that I resign from the post of Vice President of India, giving priority to health and following medical advice.
A post shared by the Vice President’s Secretariat on Jagdeep Dhankhar’s travel plan on July 23 also indicated that the decision to resign was taken in a very short time. It was said in this post that India’s Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar will be on a day -long visit to Jaipur, Rajasthan on 23 July 2025. This post was shared at 3:53 pm on Monday.
Sources told India Today TV that Jairam Ramesh had called Vice President Dhankhar at 7:30 pm, on which Dhankar said that he is with his family and is discussing health issues, so he will talk tomorrow.
Jairam Ramesh told in a social media post that yesterday something very serious happened between 1 pm and 4:30 pm, due to which Nadda and Rijiju deliberately did not participate in the second Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting. And now unexpectedly Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned.
