Now, if there is rapid bleeding due to injury or accident, there is no need to panic. IIT Kanpur has prepared a sponge which, when applied, can stop bleeding immediately. This sponge is completely indigenous. Its tests were first conducted on rats and other animals. Since then, efforts are being made to use it for humans.
At present this sponge is being used in the defense sector. It may take about six months to prepare it for medical use. This special sponge is made from sea grass and also uses a lock (adhesive substance) in it.

According to researcher Kaushal Shakya, earlier work was done on polymer packaging in his lab. During this time he started studying sponges that absorb blood. He observed that if any material can absorb water then why not blood also? He then made a sponge using seagrass and cellulose and tested it on animals. In which it was seen that the sponge was completely absorbing the blood. Now it will be tested on humans. After this it will be made available in the Indian markets.
According to Professor Vivek Verma of IIT Kanpur, the red grass found on the sea shore is thicker and denser than the common grass. When cellulose is added to it, a structural change occurs in which blood cells get trapped. When it is applied on an injury, bleeding stops immediately. This sponge can also be used as first aid. For this, a patent has been filed in DRDO, while two patents have already been filed in IIT Kanpur.
