New Delhi. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy battle between India and Australia is now nearing its end. There is every possibility that the results of the Sydney test will come on Sunday. Test matches are being played between India and Australia since 1947. This series remained nameless for almost 50 years. Then came the year 1996. This year it was named Border-Gavaskar Trophy. During commentary with Irfan Pathan on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, ‘In those days there used to be India-Australia Council. One was in India and the other was in Australia. I don’t know if it’s still there or not. But at that time the same council proposed that now the winner of the Test series between India and Australia will be given a trophy named Border-Gavaskar.

Gavaskar, who is counted among the great batsmen of the world, further says, ‘The reason for choosing both these names is because of Test cricket. When was the first series played?
The first series for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy was played in 1996. This was a series of one match only. India won this match. Indian captain Sachin Tendulkar won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time.
How many test matches did India win?
India and Australia are playing the 17th series under the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. India has won 10 of these. During this period, 61 test matches have been played between the two teams. Of these, 25 have been won by India and 22 by Australia. The remaining 13 matches have been draws.
