In the midst of premature demands of premature general election in Bangladesh, the Chief Advisor of the Interim Government, Mohammad Yunus, has clarified that general elections in the country can be held at any time between December 2025 and June 2026. He said this while addressing a program in Tokyo, the capital of Japan, where he is on an official visit.
Yunus’s statement came at a time when Bangladesh’s main opposition party Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) organized a huge rally in the capital Dhaka. This rally demanded the restoration of political rights of youth.
Mohammad Yunus said in his address, “When elections are held, an elected government takes responsibility and we hand over power.
He further said that we have six months time. This will depend on how fast we are able to improve. If the improvement is slow, it will take some more time. But this process cannot run indefinitely till June 2026, we have to complete it under any circumstances.
Yunus’s statement is considered politically very important, as there has been an atmosphere of political instability and uncertainty in the country since Sheikh Hasina’s withdrawal from power in Bangladesh. Experts believe that this statement explains the intention of the interim government, but the eyes of the opposition parties and the international community are still on whether these elections will be held in a fair and transparent manner.
