Gyanesh kumar new cec: The selection committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a high -level meeting on Monday, 17 February for the selection of the new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). Apart from PM Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi were also included in this committee.

After this meeting, former IAS officer of Kerala cadre Gyanesh Kumar has been elected as the new Chief Election Commissioner. The panel headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave the green signal to the appointment of Gyanesh Kumar. Actually, the current Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar is retiring on Tuesday, February 18. After him is the most senior Election Commissioner Dnyanesh Kumar, in such a situation, he was already likely to be made CEC.

Who is Dnyanesh Kumar?

Dnyanesh Kumar is a 1988-batch IAS officer. He retired on 31 January 2024. Gyanesh Kumar is an officer of Kerala cadre. He has worked as Secretary in the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs. Apart from this, he has also been a secretary in the Union Ministry of Cooperation. According to the Times of India report, Dnyanesh Kumar played an important role in the formation of Ram Janmabhoomi Tirtha Trust while in the Ministry of Home Affairs. When Article 370 was removed, he was in charge of Jammu and Kashmir Desk in the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Objection of Rahul Gandhi and Congress

Leader of the Opposition in the selection committee, Rahul Gandhi, raised questions on the hasty in the selection of the new CEC from the Congress Party. Congress leaders Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Ajay Maken held a press conference and appealed to postpone the meeting on the appointment of CEC. He had said that until the decision of the Supreme Court in this case comes, there should not be a meeting.
