American-Indian student has been banned from graduation ceremony at a university in America. The student who was stopped from attending a graduation ceremony is named Megha Vemuri. Actually, Megha recently gave a speech in favor of Palestine, after which this decision was taken against him. Megha Vemuri, president of the 2025 class of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), had earlier given a speech in support of Palestine, after which he was stopped from attending the official graduate ceremony.
Online speech went viral
The university confirmed disciplinary action in a statement on Friday without naming the student. MIT spokesperson Kimberly Alan said, “While the role of that student was scheduled in today’s graduate degree ceremony, she was informed that she would not be allowed to participate in today’s programs.” The speech went viral online and it was shared by Palestinian youth movement.
During the convocation on Thursday, Vemuri wore Kefiah – which symbolizes Palestinian solidarity – and condemned research cooperation with the Israeli army of MIT. He accused the university of “aid and promoting” in Israeli actions against Palestinians and called the “independent Palestine”. He praised the activism of the campus in support of Palestinian rights, saying, “MIT students will not tolerate massacre.”
Concern over the destruction of Gaza during speech
In her speech, this student of Indian origin has expressed concern over the devastation of Gaza in the Israeli-Filistine struggle and questioned the MIT’s relationship with the Israeli army. MIT officials said Vemuri’s comment was different from the earlier accepted speech and her work was like protesting during an official ceremony. Indian-American student leader Vemuri was expected to re-speech at Friday’s main graduation ceremony, but was informed that he would no longer be allowed to participate in it. The incident occurred amidst increasing tension in American premises in Gaza and increasing investigation of institutional relations with Israel. In recent months, pro -Palestine protests have intensified, seeking students to separate from companies and programs related to the Israeli army.

Megha Vemuri, who was born and raised in Alfareta, Georgia, has graduated from Alfareta High School in 2021. He recently completed his UG in Computer Science, Neuroscience and Linguistics. Earlier, he had done a research internship at the UCT Neuroscience Institute in Cape Town, South Africa. He led the ‘Written Revolution’ initiative advocating global reasons.
