India’s Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar suddenly resigned from his post on Monday (July 21, 2025). He cited health reasons in his resignation. The special thing is that the monsoon session of Parliament started on Monday and Dhankar looked active on the first day. He also started the proceedings of the Rajya Sabha smoothly, but the news of resignation after a few hours created a stir in the political corridors.
Opposition raised questions, expressed suspicion on health reason
Many opposition leaders have raised the question that if the health was the reason, then why was the resignation not resigned before the start of the monsoon session? Congress leaders Jairam Ramesh, Pramod Tiwari and Akhilesh Prasad Singh say that they met Dhankar at 5:45 pm on the day of session and then they looked absolutely healthy. Not only this, he had talked on the phone till 7:30 pm. In such a situation, this resignation was only due to health reasons, this is not digesting the opposition.
Dhankhar’s visit to Jaipur was also decided on 23 July, whose information was already given through a press release. The tour was not even canceled, which makes it clear that the resignation was not a sudden decision. Some leaders believe that this may be a sign of an internal confrontation or large political developments.
The post of Vice President was handled in 2022
74 -year -old Jagdeep Dhankar took over as Vice President in August 2022 and his term was till 2027. Prior to this, he has been the Governor of West Bengal. He was often in the discussion due to his strict attitude in the Rajya Sabha and innocent statements. The opposition has also been calling them biased.
Now who will handle work?
Now the big question is, who will be the new Vice President? According to the constitution, it is mandatory to conduct elections within 60 days. Till then Harivansh Narayan Singh, Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha will play the role of acting chairman. This sudden resignation of Dhankhar can also affect the proceedings of Parliament and can give a new direction to politics.
