BCCI removed India from ODI captaincy, who won India after 11 years, Captain Rohit Sharma. This was the most shocking decision in the Australia tour team announcement on Saturday. Shubman Gill was also handed over the command of the ODI team after the Test, he became the 28th ODI captain of India.
After receiving the full time captaincy of the three formats in 2022, Rohit took the team to the final in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Despite winning 2 ICC Trophy and 2 Asia Cups, Rohit was not allowed to captain till 2027 ODI World Cup. In such a situation, the question arises as to why he was removed from the captaincy. The five reasons behind the change in the press conference by the Chief Selector, the five reasons are understood.
Reason-1: ODI World Cup 2 years away
The ODI World Cup is still 2 years away. The tournament is to be held in Africa in October-November 2027. Agarkar said that this is the right time to create a new captain. Management wants to give Shubman time as ODI captain. So that they get used to leading this team by the World Cup.
Shubman was also given the command of the red ball team after Rohit’s Test retirement in May this year. He draws the 5-Test series 2–2 in England. Now he also took a 1-0 lead in the series against the West Indies. In view of the future, Shubman was given the command, while Shreyas Iyer was made vice -captain.
Reason-2: Rohit does not play domestic cricket
Rohit was regular in domestic cricket till 2013, but his matches have been reduced since then. He last played a list-a match for Mumbai in the semi-finals of Vijay Hazare Trophy in 2018. He has since been missing from domestic cricket. The selection committee has also emphasized that every player will have to play domestic cricket to be a part of the team. Rohit’s quitting domestic cricket also became the reason for his removal from captaincy.

Reason-3: Over 38 years of age
Rohit is 38 years old, he won the Champions Trophy title at the age of 37 to Team India under his captaincy. So far, only 5 players from India have been able to play ODI even after the age of 38 years. Among them, Mohinder Amarnath was the only player who played ODI till the age of 39.
Team India does not pay attention to the aged players keeping in mind the fitness in ODI format. Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, Rahul Dravid and Sunil Gavaskar also played ODI cricket till the age of 38. If Rohit plays the World Cup of 2027, he will be 40 years old and he will also become the oldest player playing ODIs from India. However, the big question is, will they be able to keep their fitness maintained for ODI cricket till then?
Reason-4: Three different captains do not want BCCI
The Chief Selector said that it is not possible to make three different captains for three formats. Gill is currently the captain of the Test and Suryakumar Yadav is the captain of the T20 team. If Rohit had remained the captain of Wade, the captains of India would have been different in all three formats at this time. Hence Gill has been given the captaincy of two formats. It is believed that Gill may soon become the captain of India in all three formats.
Reason-5: Youth ready to take place
Rohit had changed his batting style since 2023. He focused on getting the team a fast start by playing big shots instead of handling the innings while opening. They have been doing the same thing for the last 2 years. For this reason, their scores were between 30 and 90 in 2023 innings. During this time he could only score 3 centuries. His strike rate in 21 innings out of 25 innings was more than 100.
By 2022, Rohit used to play big innings and took the team to a big score. Now Rohit gives the team a fast start, to do this work, the management has young players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Abhishek Sharma and Rituraj Gaikwad. On the other hand, Team India has Rohit’s replacement at the opening position, but there is no batsman to replace Virat’s work on number-3. Therefore, BCCI will not think about the removal of ODI team till the World Cup of 2027 until Virat himself wants.
It is difficult to return Jadeja-Shami
On the tour of Australia, 2 veterans spin all -rounder Ravindra Jadeja and fast bowler Mohammed Shami did not get a place in the ODI team. Both were part of the Champions Trophy winning squad. Shami is 35 and Jadeja is 36 years old.
Australia’s pitches also remain like South Africa’s pitches. If both veterans could not get a chance on the tour of Australia, then it is impossible for both to get a place in the ODI World Cup team. In the squad, Jadeja was replaced by Washington Sundar and Shami was replaced by Harshit Rana.

The 3 ODI series against Australia will start in Perth from October 19. The remaining 2 ODIs will be played on 23 and 25 October. After this, the 5 T20 series will be played by 8 November. For which the team has been announced under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav.
