Vineet Kumar, founder and global president of Cyberpeace, says that Starlink is coming in India as a new technology and option. Companies like Jio, Airtel and VI are offering fast and affordable services across the country, while Starlink offers Internet connectivity through satellite.
‘Some possible challenges can also arise with it. Starlink’s traffic works through foreign ground stations and global gateways, which can raise questions on data out of the country, privacy and security.
He said, ‘It will be an important step in this direction to ensure the facility of intercept for the installation of local gateway in the country, localization of data (according to DPDP Act) and statutory monitoring. There may also be a possibility of obstruction of operation of military, atomic and other sensitive establishments due to dual use technology. Law enforcement agencies can also face difficulties in the absence of local server and monitoring encrypted traffic.
