The language fight in Maharashtra shook the land of politics. Fadnavis government decided to make Hindi a third language. But the wave of Marathi identity went so strong that the BJP -led Mahayuti government had to bow down. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis targeted Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray as ‘Palturam’, which was also retaliated by Uddhav Thackeray.
Government hears public voice: Fadnavis
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said that this is a government that takes decisions in the interest of the people, is a government that hears the voice of people in democracy. We have constituted a committee which will study on the subject of starting Hindi language in primary classes in the state and submit a report.
Chief Minister Fadnavis is saying that the government did not bow down, saw the spirit of the public and decided. At the same time, Uddhav Thackeray is saying that this is the victory of Marathi Asmita.
Committee and report formed during the tenure of Uddhav Sarkar
Chief Minister Fandavis said, on 21 September 2020, Uddhav Sarkar formed an expert committee. On 16 October 2020, the task force became under the leadership of Dr. Raghunath Mashelkar. The report was submitted on 14 September 2021. It was recommended to make Hindi a mandatory language. Under this, English and Hindi should be compulsory second language in class 1 to 12 and potentially college degree programs, so that students can be prepared for technical and professional courses, while Marathi is given priority in higher education.
He said, Uddhav Thackeray had directed to implement the report immediately, at that time Sanjay Raut was also present.
Marathi Asmita victory: Uddhav Thackeray
The chairman of the Shiv Sena (UBT) said, ‘I would like to thank different political parties that everyone came together on this issue. The protests on July 5 could be postponed due to the cancellation of the triple policy. The demonstration could involve the leaders of Shiv Sena of Eknath Shinde faction and NCP of Ajit Pawar. The appointment of financial experts like Dr. Narendra Jadhav is a joke to look into the matters related to education. We have slapped those who hate Marathi language and this unity should remain ‘.

Fadnavis government order and then U-turn
On 16 April 2025 and 17 June 2025, the Fadnavis government gave a government order. But on 28 June 2025, the Fadnavis government had to take a U-turn under pressure from several parties, including the opposition. However, Fadnavis said that Thackeray had directed to implement the report immediately in the presence of Sanjay Raut. But now this Hindi is being dragged into unnecessary controversies in Maharashtra.
BJP accused of lying: Sanjay Raut
Shiv Sena (UBT) Sanjay Raut said, there is a national policy of the Bharatiya Janata Party, to lie. The same is a national policy, they only work to lie. If Uddhav Thackeray has made a report, bring it in front. We are repeatedly saying that if there is any such paper, then make it public. A committee report has come out, is it kept in the cabinet? Can it not be discussed? You have forcefully discussed Hindu power, why? Because it is your national policy. If a national policy comes in front of the state, then it is necessary to discuss it. Devendra Fadnavis has become the Chief Minister three times, does he not know this much?
Political allegations and conflicts
Now the next chapter of politics has started. Uday Samanta accused the Thackeray faction of taking credit, then Sunil Prabhu gave a new turn and said that we had accepted the report, but the BJP had demolished the Mahavikas Aghadi government.
Government under pressure from protest against Hindi imperative
In fact, as soon as Hindi was compulsory from the first grade in Maharashtra, the opposition Shiv Sena (UBT) and Raj Thackeray’s party MNS became one against it. On July 5, both parties announced to take out the Mahamorcha. The way the matter caught fire, it increased the possibility that it can become a big issue by going ahead. Before this, the Fadnavis government formed a committee and put the matter on hold.
