23 out of 33 site of Yamuna River have failed in the water quality test. Here the amount of oxygen in the water has been found to be almost zero. This information has been given by the Parliamentary Standing Committee built on the water resource.
The Standing Committee presented this report in Parliament on Tuesday (March 11). This report has been prepared based on monitoring of 33 sites. It also includes 6 sites in Delhi.
According to the panel, the shocking thing has been revealed in the report of 23 sites. In these places, the level of dissolved oxygen in water has been found zero. The dissolved oxygen reflects the ability to maintain the life of the river.
In its report on the upper Yamuna river cleaning project and river floor management in Delhi, the panel warned that despite the construction and upgradation of sewage treatment plants (STP) in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, the level of pollution remains dangerously high.
Investigation between January 2021 to May 2023
The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) assessed water quality at 33 places between January 2021 to May 2023 with State Pollution Control Boards. It was tested on four major parameters of dissolved oxygen (do), pH, biochemical oxygen demand (bod) and fecal coliform (FC).
The situation better in Uttarakhand-Himachal
According to the report, out of 33 monitoring sites, 4 – 4 sites of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh meet water quality norms. All six sites failed in Haryana. None of the 7 sites in Delhi complies with standards in 2021, although the Palla site showed improvements in 2022 and 2023.

Decorary worry stored in the bottom of Yamuna
The debris accumulated at the bottom of the Yamuna river remains a matter of major concern. A study was done by the Delhi Irrigation and Flood Control Department in collaboration with CSIR-Niri. In this, samples of mud were collected from major sites such as old iron bridges, Geeta colony and DND bridge during the monsoon period period. High levels of heavy metals such as chromium, copper, lead, nickel and zinc were found in samples.
Panel recommends controlled dredging
The panel recommended controlled dredging to remove this poisonous mud. Also warned that it pose a serious health threat and can become the biggest reason for spoiling the quality of the river. Dredging is at risk of the river floor being unstable.
However, the National Clean Ganga Mission (NMCG) expressed concern that large -scale dragging could cause the river floor to be unstable and lead to environmental decline. The panel also marked the failure to maintain environmental flow in the Yamuna.
According to the 1994 MoU between the Yamuna Basin states, Haryana is required to release 10 cumex water from Hathini Kund barrage to maintain ecological balance. However, the committee found that this flow is inadequate, as most of its part evaporates before reaching Delhi or flows.
Data of unauthorized industries in Delhi is not clear
The report also criticized the lack of data of unauthorized industries in Delhi. The Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC) informed the panel that it monitors only 28 sanctioned industrial areas.
Of these, 17 areas are associated with 13 general waste treatment plants (CETPs). The remaining 11 is not classified as water polluting industrial areas.
However, the panel said that there is no data available on unauthorized industrial units that are leaving untreated wastes in the Yamuna. The panel recommended that the Delhi government study should study such units and study pollution control measures.
The panel also pointed to failure in the treatment of domestic sewage. According to the report, about 22 major drains leave untreated sewage directly into the Yamuna. Yamuna flows through an area of 40 km in Delhi. It enters Palla from Haryana and originates in Uttar Pradesh in Asgharpur.
