Amidst the severe cold in the northern areas of the country, IMD has expressed hope of getting relief from the cold in the next three to five days. According to the Meteorological Department, due to the activation of Western Disturbance on January 1, the temperature may increase across the country.
At the same time, there may be heavy rain and snowfall in the hilly areas. Due to this, the Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert in Himachal Pradesh between January 4-6. There is a warning of light rain and storm in many areas of the state.
These include Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti, Shimla, Kangra, Mandi and Chamba. On the other hand, there was the first snowfall of 2025 in Kashmir on Thursday and the second snowfall of this season in the plains of the valley.
Earlier on Thursday, a thick layer of fog covered many major cities of North India including the capital Delhi. At the same time, in Gautam Buddha Nagar of Uttar Pradesh, schools up to 8th were closed till further orders.
Zero visibility was recorded at Delhi, Gwalior, Agra, Amritsar and Pathankot airports. Similar weather conditions prevailed in some coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh.

Snowfall will continue in Kashmir due to Western Disturbance Parts of Bandipora, Kupwara, Baramulla and Anantnag in Jammu and Kashmir received heavy snowfall on Thursday. While there was light snowfall in the plains of Srinagar and Ganderbal.
Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Pahalgam and Zojila also received fresh snowfall. The Meteorological Department estimates that there may be snowfall in some areas on Friday also. Western disturbance may occur in Jammu and Kashmir between January 4 and 6. Due to this, snowfall may continue.
There was snowfall in Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday.
Temperature expected to remain below normal in Delhi for fifth day The temperature in Delhi is expected to be below normal for the fifth consecutive day on Friday. The maximum temperature in the city on Thursday was recorded at 16.2°C, 3.1°C below normal. At the same time, the minimum temperature was 7.6°C. Similarly, the temperature on Friday is also expected to be 17°C and 8°C.
Amidst the severe cold, Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) has built about 200 shelter homes in the city, in which more than 7000 people are living.
According to official figures, between November 15 and December 31, more than 4400 homeless people have been rescued and shifted to shelter homes. Here, along with three meals a day, health checkup service is also being provided to them.
The official said the Rain Basera mobile app helps the rescue team track the GPS location of homeless people who need immediate help. 621 people were rescued in November while 3826 people were rescued in December.
DUSIB has built about 200 shelter homes in Delhi.
