Sachin Tendulkar delivered an impromptu pep talk to the Mumbai probables on Saturday (August 14). The cricket legend spent over an hour with about 40 players, who have been having a camp at the indoor facility of the BKC Stadium in Mumbai.
The face-to-face meeting with the maestro was organised by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), incidentally, on the 31st anniversary of his first of his 100 international hundreds.
Tendulkar largely dwelt upon how to handle the pressures of national and international cricket. A veteran of 664 international matches besides close to a 1000 other official games, the 48-year-old Tendulkar also advised the players on how to create an outdoor simulation inside the indoor facility. “He suggested the MCA to turn the AC inside the room so that it would give a semblance of replication of the outdoor temperature,” an MCA official said of Tendulkar’s idea.
With no permission from the State Government for the resumption of sports activity in the state, the camp has totally been an indoor exercise and in that context the advice to switch off the air conditioner was a welcome suggestion, felt the players and coaches.
“It was such a valuable advice. It should help,” said a player who cannot come on record for want of permission from the association to speak to the media. “He has had suggestions for players on how to handle success and how to handle failures. He had tips on how to overcome loss of form, how to prepare for a game etc. For the bowlers he gave tips on how to get into rhythm, and maintain a steady line and length.”
Tendulkar related his own experience to hammer home the point on eliminating the fear of failure and a feeling of inefficiency. He reminded the house about his own bad phase of 2007 and how he overcame it. He in fact had told the youngsters that he would turn up at the BKC facility at 6 in every morning and get into a grind of fitness and cricketing routines.
Specifically he suggested the players on how to handle the crunch situations before and during a game. “If a player feels that the next game is important for his career, it would be natural that he would be anxious with a sense of anticipation and anxiety. He has suggested drills and methods on how to overcome the cerebral apprehensions,” said another MCA official.
Tendulkar spent time with a few youngsters overseeing their batting drills. A couple of beneficiaries of this impromptu coaching class were Yashasvi Jaiswal and Armaan Jaffer, the young batsmen known as prodigies in Mumbai cricket. He suggested a few improvements in their batting drills.
