India Bangladesh Border BGB BSF Talks in New Delhi Fencing in 150 Yards Near Zero Line | BGB chief spoke to India on the issue of fencing 150 yards on Bangladesh border

Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzamam Siddiqui, Director General of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), said that he raised the issue of fencing in 150 yards of land on the border in front of India and expressed some objections. He says that no country is allowed to create a structure without consent at a distance of 150 yards on both sides of the zero line between the two countries as it is no men’s land.

India is putting a fence in this area, on which Bangladesh objected. He sees it as a defense development, for which the consent of both countries is necessary. However, India does not consider it a defense structure and says that this is being done to stop only illegal infiltration, criminal activities and cattle crossing border for fodder.

According to the news agency PTI, the three -day 55th Director Story Border Coordination Conference between BGB and BSF was concluded in Delhi. The BGB Director General said that the issue of fences near the international border was the most focused agenda during the talks. He said that a distance of 150 yards on both sides of the zero line is considered ‘no man’s land’ and both sides are not allowed to create any permanent structure or defense capacity without the consent of the other side.

General Mohammad Ashrafuzamam Siddiqui said that Bangladesh objected to issues where it believes that mutual consent has not yet been created or it can be done better. He and BSF Director General Chief Daljit Singh Chaudhary said that he expects to resolve these issues in future and the Director General of BGB said that joint inspection will be done in such areas.

When asked about the incidents of illegal infiltration from Bangladesh into India, the two heads said that after August 5 last year, there has been a decrease in such incidents on the 4,096 km long international border. Daljit Singh Chaudhary said, ‘Infiltration has come down significantly and this has been possible with the active help of BGB. During the entire crisis (collapse of the previous government), BGB stood shoulder to shoulder with us and helped us to maintain peace on the border.

General Mohammad Ashrafuzamam Siddiqui said, ‘Some development works are being done from both sides and the consent of both sides has been taken, but sometimes due to some communication gap, if no army is informed about any army, So objections are raised by the other army … We try to resolve these issues mutually.

The BGB chief also said that there was no discussion on rebuilding the Indo-Bangladesh border treaty, which was agreed in 1975. He said, ‘It was not under the purview of this meeting.’ It was the 55th edition of the biennial DG -level border talks organized by their respective Border Security Forces – BSF and BGB between India and Bangladesh.

After the fall of Sheikh Hasina government in August last year, it was the first top level meeting between the two Border Security Forces. The BSF protects the 4,096 km long India -Bangladesh border that passes through five states – West Bengal (2,217 km), Tripura (856 km), Meghalaya (443 km), Assam (262 km) and Mizoram (318 km) .
