The Supreme Court has refused to hear new petitions on the Waqf Amendment Act. The court has asked the petitioners that it has decided to hear 5 petitions. If someone wants to say something different, then he will have to apply for interfering in the same petitions.
On Tuesday (April 29, 2025), there were 24 such petitions in the Supreme Court, which could not find a place in the list of hearing last time. These included petitions of people like Congress leader Imran Pratapgarhhi, TMC leader Derek Obreon, National Conference MLA Arjun Singh Raju and Taslim Rahmani. The court refused to list any petition in future.
It should be noted that after about 200 petitions were filed on the Waqf Amendment Act, a 3 -judge bench headed by Chief Justice Sanjeev Khanna had decided that he would hear only 5 petitions. The new petitioners demanded to be heard. To this, the Chief Justice said, “Many petitions get exactly from each other. If someone wants to speak, he should work hard.”
On April 17, the Supreme Court had said that it is not possible for him to listen to all the petitions filed in hundreds. In such a situation, the petitioner should tell which 5 petitions should be heard by the court. According to the list submitted by the petitioners, the court had asked to hear these five petitions in future:-
1. Arshad Madani
2. Mohammad Jamil Merchant
3. Mohammad Fazlurrahim
4. Sheikh Nurul Hasan
5. Asaduddin Owaisi
The court had made it clear that these petitions also in future instead of the petitioner’s name in Re: WAQF Amendment Act, 2025. ” (Self cognizance: Waqf Amendment Act, 2025) Petition 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 will be written.
The main case is to be heard on 5 May in the Supreme Court. At present, the government has given assurance to the court not to denotify any Waqf property and not make a new appointment in the Waqf Board/Waqf Council.
